    johnson 90hp v4

    hey guys
i have a johnson 90hp v4 model #j90pleeb serial number 04656530 i am in desperate need of some info. i need a shop manual for it. i have a problem in the foot. in forward gear it makes a clanking noise, the higher you rev the motor the louder it gets. in reverse it is quiet as a mouse. dropped the oil out of it and found a bunch of metal shavings in it. any ideas or info would be greatly appreciated!

    thanks!

I would recommend going the Evinrude site and shop online for it. That's where I got mine for my 2000 model year Johnson. I'm not sure of the model year of your motor, but that could mean you having to Ken Cook for the manuals.

You can order the manual from your dealer. If it needs repair I would suggest eddie pope (aka gearcaseman) here. He is one of the best. His number is in the one stop shopping link at the top of the page.

Thanks Fred. The unit in question sounds as if the adjustment to forward gear has been out for a while, creating rounded edges on the clutch dog and the gear itself. Or, the shift shaft could be broken, not allowing the C.D. to move forward enough to engage the gear. I would go in and take a look for sure, at this point.

If you're not experienced in the shimming of the new gears, you could potentially have future problems. I would let Eddie Pope take care of it, very reasonably priced and very concientious. I don't know anyone that can touch him on price and reliability. JMHO
