1980 Johnson 150hp
1. Should I run out the gas after each trip? Have always done this on my smaller 2- stroke outboards. Currently using stabil.
2. What octane is best for this motor?

Hey Jeff,
1) No reason too run it out of fuel.
2) Use regular old 87 octane, I would add a bottle of carbon guard every once in a while to the tank
3) Decarb once a season and you should be good to go.![]()

Where might I get a bottle of this "carbon guard"?
I don't think I've ever seen it. Also, I've been running boat motors for 40 years and since I've been monitoring this site I've seen several referrals to "decarbing" the engine once a year. What, pray tell, is it and how do I do it?
thanks

Mark,
You can purchase carbon guard at any BRP dealership you simply add it to your fuel system. To decarb your motor you need to purchase a can of OMC/BRP engine tuner and either apply if via the shrader valve on your primer solenoid or you can get the can that has the spray tube and spray it down through your carb throats while the motor is running out of the water on the engine muffs. Follow the directions on the can. This will clear out most all of the carbon build up in the combustion chambers. CM![]()
But don't do it in front of your garage door, on a pretty concrete driveway, or in front of a vehicle you care about.![]()
