Repower Wiring Question - Seahorse, Championman - calling any experts

I am replacing a 150Gt (85) with a Carbed 150 Intruder (98). Conventional wisdom says that I need a new control box and wiring harness which add up to about $ 500.00.

Lockjaw said that we was able to use a cossover wiring harness that let him use a 96 Venom on his old controls which was only $ 50.00 approx. Can I get a way with that on my setup? Any limitations? Is it a BPR Part Number.

Any advice is appreciated especially if I can save a lot on an already expensive upgrade.

    Thanks,
    Greg

    98 Evinrude 150 Intruder

SOLD all the above Fall of 2010 - bought a big open bow Larson "family" boat. Family does not like the Mississippi River as much as I do, so I sold that in the fall of 2012.
I'm thinking it is time for a straight up bass boat.

The harness I was talking about is a BRP part, and it allows you to connect your wiring harness in your boat to the modular harness the new engine uses. You need the newer model oil tank.

I still don't see why they say you need new controls. My old controls worked fine.

I believe the part number for the harness adapter is 176349.

Lockjaw, what is the system check guage? Better yet, what do you lose by not having it in the circuit?

Maybe asked another way, I guess I know what he system check guage is, but do I lose functionality by not having it? Will the engine still shut it self down when if it overheats?

Thanks for all the infomation so far.

A systems check guage is either a small round gauge about the size of a gas gauge, or a tachometer, with it built in. It has 4 "idiot" lights as I like to call them that tell you of various problems with the engine, in addition to sounding a warning horn. Things like low oil, no oil, or check engine. I can't remember what the other one is.

It just makes diagnosing a problem easier then trying to figure out what warning you have from the horn. The engine will still function and run fine without one.

To me, the most frustrating alarm to deal with is the check engine one. If it goes off it means you have a fuel restriction. The gauge makes that easier to figure out.

What I am not sure about is if you can make one work with the old harness even with the adapter harness. I do not think you can. But I think what happens is you get a different alarm for each problem when you don't have the gauge.
