I have a 2001 Evinrude 225 Rude Ram Ser # G04931950 Model # E225HSIF that is developing a lower unit problem. Today I was doing my routine maintenance check and when I pulled the screws out of the lower unit to check my fluid levels I noticed some small pieces of metal on the magnets. When I drained the gear lube out I noticed a very small amount of "Tan" lube, which I assume was water.

I filled the unit with fresh lube, ran the engine in both forward and reverse, shut it down and drained the lower unit again...very few metal fragments on the magnets. There isn't any growling or clinking sounds, the prop shaft spins freely.

My question, what is a reasonable cost for repairing a lower unit if seals and bearings it all that is needed? How much for a complete overhaul if the gears are bad too?

Thanks in advance for your replies..
