    Lower unit bit the dust

Cranked up like usual,, but as it was coming on plane, bogged down and died. After restarting it sounded strange. Got a tow to the ramp and was thingin powerhead until I got home and noticed the prop did not move freely. Pulled the plugs and the starter could not spin the motor. I pulled the lower unit and this time the starter spun the flywheel like it should. I then tried to turn the drive shaft and it would not budge. So it appears the\ lower unit has a big problem.
    Thoughts besides I am screwed?

The gear oil looked great, no water and good blue/green color with no metal particles or pieces.

Would be good to know what engine you have (preferably including serial number).

From your description, it sounds as though the driveshaft is locked (possibly due to bearing failure, or pinion gear failure).

Teardown and assessment of the damage would be the next logial step.

Re: Lower unit bit the dust (LaTriton)

After closer inspection, there are metal shavings in the gear oil that I drained it was dark when I was checking it out and the flashlight did show it like sunlight did today. I am thinking it is toast and I would like tom pull the prop shaft and see how bad it looks. I have removed the retainer but am having a hard time finding a jaw pulled to remove the carrier. Any tricks, I just want a peek!

Requires a bearing carrier puller- which can be turned with it's two fingers facing OUTWARDS to grasp the carrier.

Note: Although you may be able to get the carrier out for inspection, that's about the limit to "DIY" disassembly or repair to the gearcase. Highly recommend getting it in to a well-qualified dealer (preferably with a Certified or Master Tech), as there are MANY special tools and service techniques required for gearcase repair.

We do repair these on a "R&R" basis (you simply send in the gearcase).... and we'll give you the option of trade-in replacement, if it's more cost advantageous upon complete inspection (or if it's even close).
