    beep after starting?

    1987 Ranger 395V
    2001 250 XB

Just installed a new 8 pin wire harness part #84-816626A15
Also installed a new warning horn and rewired all the gages (purple & black )

Only difference from the old harness is that the tilt/trim , temp, and trim gage, wiring is all in with the main harness #84-816626A15.

When turning the key to run, there is one beep.
When turning the key to start, when it goes back to run there is another beep?

Is this a "short" beep after you start the engine (just one)?

Have you VERIFIED for certain that it indeed the ENGINE warning horn (and not some other "horn equipped device")?

CHECK BATTERY- LOAD TEST, and verify CLEAN connections (engine cables installed FIRST, remaining lugs largest to smallest, finish off connections with a STAINLESS LOCKNUT- do NOT use wingnuts).

Found the cause of the extra beep.
The purple wire is hot with key in run position. but not in start position.
This is not the purple wire from engine to key but from key to gages, witch is the one I tied into for the warning horn.

On a side note I still have the stalling issue so it wasn't the ignition harness.

Next steep is to run the boat and have my buddy watch the fuel pressure to see what it does when the engine dies.

Let us know what you find......

Strange on the purple wire situation.... it should remain "live" even in the start position.

Well I got the boat out on the water Friday.
Ran it for about 10-15 minuets till it stalled, pulled the cowl and hooked up the fuel tester. Ran the boat for another 15 -20 minuets till it quit, only problem is we ran out of gas. Need to get some more gas and try again Saturday.

Will it damage the engine to run without the cowl?

Although I wouldn't recommend running this way all the time, it shouldn't hurt the engine to run it for "diagnostic purposes" without the cowling (just keep the powerhead dry).

Burned up about 10 galons of gas today and could not get it to stall. Engine ran great the hole time, don't know what to do now.

This problem COULD be related to the amount of fuel you have in the boat (perhaps a pinhole or crack in the pickup tube for the fuel tank), or simply "too low a fuel level"....
