Can you cut down the length of a steering cable?

I have a rotary style helm and I found a good deal on an almost new cable but its about 2' to long. I was thinking I could cut the fitting loose, then cut out a foot of the coating and re-crimp the end. Can this be done?

I think you are messing with fire here. The last thing you want is a steering cable coming apart at high speed.
