    Johnson Motor Trouble!!!! HELP!!!!!!

This morning my buddy and I head out to the lake and unload the boat. I have owned carb'd car motors before, so I would expect them to be the same. You know the usual let the motor warm and and then take off. Well this didn't quite go that way. I let it idle for about 2mins then it died. Started it back up idle for a min tops then died again. If I tried to touch the hot foot it would die. So finally got it to run some what ok idling. Put the motor in gear it died. By this time I'm livid. Finally what I had to do was trany drop at around 2000 before i could go with out it dieing. After running down the lake it ran smooth as silk and idle like there was never anything wrong. Fished around for about 15-20 mins. Start the motor back up to head to a new spot. Exact same process over and over. And when I mean let it warm up, depending on outside temp I would let it idle for about 5 mins or so. Any thing will help I'm at a loss. To much gas, to lil. Hot foot not ajusted properly, because its a bear to press down. This is a 99' motor.

This seems to be a common problem(just do some reading) with these moters.Mine is doing kinda the same thing except only when it is warm.My neighbors is doing the same thing as well.Nobody has really seemed to find a fix or that i can find out about anyway.I beleive it is the vro but somebody else may chime in.

Maybe you take things to literal. I was shocked that no one on the BBC board had any ideas. And obviously you don't either because all you can do it comment on my bump.

Re: Johnson Motor Trouble!!!! HELP!!!!!! (ranger00)

I'll bump this with the obvious cause of this problem.

Change your fuel line pump bulb with and
omc original - @ $12.00 and that should get you running. Your new bulb will have yellow end tips. Make sure it is installed correctly - with the arrow direction to flow and make sure there is no air leak in your new connections. The fuel line should be firm and not soft or mushy also.

your old bulb probably has a pin hole in the diaphram due to the E-10 gas you are runnning.

Changed your fuel filter lately? Might be a good time. Do not over tighten it.

Please don't ever rev the motor up to 2K and dump it into gear again of you'll be looking at a big repair bill.

Re: Johnson Motor Trouble!!!! HELP!!!!!! (Mr Limpet)

    Thank You Mr limpet,
I will try changing the bulb becaues it does look a little old. Probaly the original.
and the fuel filters are new so is the VRO.
And trust me I won't be dumping into gear anymore.
At the time I was livid and didn't care. I just wanted to get back to the docks.

and sorry the problem wasn't obvious to me.
This is the first boat I have owned and I've only owned it since Sunday.
We all have to start some where.

Re: Johnson Motor Trouble!!!! HELP!!!!!! (ranger00)

Yes, we were all new to this boating thing at one time. Your problem experienced is fuel/ fuel system related. Here is some more long distance diagnosis and tips. Your boat probably sat a long time in the previous owner's yard before you got it. It has old gas and that should have been drained or treated with some Star-tron. It is a good idea to dump some into your boat on every tank full. Your boat could need a little PM to keep you on the water and happy. De-carbon the engine with some spray Sea Foam or something similar. Change the fuel filter, LU lube and tighten every nut, bolt and screw. Don't forget the trailer nuts and bolts(spring u-bolts), bearings and the lights. Check the condition of the tires too.

My boat trailer had new tires on it - but they were 8 years old and dry rotted. They "looked" good. After a little usage, the tires developed a bulge where the tread separated exposing the cords.

Live well & bilge pumps will leak at the o-ring. Most pumps are cartridge type that snap together or twist and lock. Don't break the tabs. There is a @ 2" o-ring in them that will shrink or weaken. Replace them with some at the local hardware store and you are back in business.
Get familiar with the engine and learn how it works. Depending on the engine age, you might consider changing the water pump and thermostats. Change the pump every 2 years to be safe.

Remember, the most important ride in a boat is the ride that gets you back to the dock at the day's end.

Re: Johnson Motor Trouble!!!! HELP!!!!!! (ranger00)

Ranger00, I have a 2000 175 Johnson Fastrike and have had the same concern for just a little bit over a year. I took the boat/motor to the dealer I bought the Boat from. Good reputation for service on Johnson/Evinrude.
Around $400.00 plus later still no fix. They started with saying I had water in the fuel tank. Added a fuel/water seperater to the fuel linefrom the tank. New fuel line and primer bulb. I told them I disconected the VRO right after I bought the boat from them. I used a calibrated bottle to mix XD50 with the gas every fill up. I had bought a new VRO from a OMC dealer elsewhere and reinstalled it as advised by another Johnson outboard owner to garranty the right fuel/oil mixture. This dealership I had the boat at ran engine tuner to decarb the engine, new plugs. Removed existing fuel in tank and added new fuel, tested ethanol level to be 5%, with 1 can of Marine Seafoam as directed by lable on can. They even spent several hours on the water and didn't charge me for that time. All this was done by a Dealer. I took the boat to another Tech nearer to my house and he took the rig to the lake and recreated the situation had a assistant adjusted the carbs and that fixed the concern I had as discribed exactly by you. That was back in October 2009, Know there have been some times when i have gotted impatient about takeing off after not running the motor for about 10-15 mins and it starts up again. I do not know if it is related but know I was at the lake this past weekend and everything just cut off while running down the lake at about 3/4 throttle. Gotto take it to the tech near the house to have hime check it out. I would check out the fuel for water(ethanol) content, then check the adjustment of the carb.

Re: Johnson Motor Trouble!!!! HELP!!!!!! (Speadtrap)

Thanks for the Help guys. Its at the shop now. I looked over everything that I could have. Just waiting to here back from them. These are pretty good at fixing motors, never heard anything bad about them. Also I had to wait to run the gas out because he just filled it up before I picked the boat up. I just dont understand because the day before I took it from him he was out on the ohio river at a fishing tourny. I wouldn't think with the problems I had he would have gone out there. Unless I did something I shouldn't have but don't believe I did. Who knows I'll keep you guys updated to see what happens.

Plus the guy I bought it from gave me a list of stuff he did.
    re greased trailer bearings
    new fuel filter and VRO
    new aerator and new batteries.

Oh Ranger00! I would watch the "Drop Shift" procedure that you spoke of in your original post. I would do that and now that i have everything dealing with that concern is fixed Iknow have a lower unit that i think is shot due to the damage i may have done when i "Drop Shifted" this motor to get it to run when I started.

I wont be doing that anymore now that its fixed. But when your in the middle of the lake and you need to get back its either do that or get the paddle out. I pick the boat out Thursday so we'll se if shes running good now.
