    E150GLERV 1994 Evinrude 150 optical sensor question

Runs well. I just replace the coils, ignition control box, regulator and recifier. I lost some power on the top end after the repair so I was checking the timing with the OMC tool, and since I was there, i check the optical sensor, and it came up bad on the sensor.

When I say, "lost power", I can't seem to get more than 5200 rpm @ 52-3 mph gps, same prop (24" raker), no other changes.
Before the changes of parts (rectifier fried, regulator and wiring harness due to bad wiring on ignition box) I could run 68 @ about 5800 if I recall correctly.

Question, if the optical sensor is bad, could the loss of power on top end be a result?

The sensor should be replaced whenever a new pack is installed as it has been changed over the years. Go ahead and put one in to be on the safe side.

Most of the time, when they fail, they either are dead completely, get erratic and the rpms go crazy at idle, or you get a high speed misfire. Sometimes dirt gets into the sensor and that disrupts the infrared beams.

When you have the sensor removed, check the plastic timing wheel for any breaks or cracks in the "windows".

When running the motor at full speed, see if the rpms change when you hit the trim up button. If so, your stator may be the problem.
