    Optical sensor?

Hi im new to this forum, but no stranger to outboards.I could use some help.I have a 1995 150 Johnson fastrike. It idles fine for about 20 seconds and then the rpm's go up very high without touching it.Could this be a bad optical sensor?

How high of RPM? Like an engine runaway? Anything is possible but I wouldn't think the sensor likely.

Thanks for the help! Yes it was like a runaway and it was the sensor. Now i have bigger problems. I took it for a test run and it idled great but after running it for 5 minutes I heard I knocking noise near the fly wheel. I pulled the flywheel cover off and saw where the flywheel was rubbing on the cover. There is a little play in the flywheel and bolts were torqued properly and the pin looked ok.The propeller castle nut was 1/8 turn loose also.I hope this could have caused it.

From my experience and it is mine only. I "had a little play" in the flywheel also and wound up being a broken crankshaft. I wish you all the luck in the world, but one thing that I did find out if that winds up being the case. The crank out of a small block Ficht will also work in your motor and there are plenty of those one here with people parting them out!

Yeah thats what im afraid of or worn main bearings. What makes it harder is ive already found and replaced many other problems with this motor.

How did the sensor speed the motor up?

    Re: Optical sensor? (jaybird1)

Mine was broken just above the top "main" bearing. When I split the case in half it finished falling apart. I was lucky though my optical sensor actually went bad about that time and kept me from making an even bigger mess than I already had. Don't worry too much about it though if you like the motor and want to keep it I done all the work myself for under $1,000 and three years in it still runs great

From what i've read about the sensor it is on the spark lever and this moves in sync with the throttle when you accelerate. If the sensor is bad it thinks the lever is moving when its not.

I will probably keep the motor since i've replaced many parts on it already. It was wore out more than i thought. Thanks for the help guys!

Yes I like it there also. Many people visit Myrtle beach during the summer and bike week. Although they have stopped bike week i believe

I did a compression check and all cylinders were between 135 and 140. my end play is around .03 after removing flywheel, inspecting and torque. Not sure if i should test or tear down now.Does anyone know if thats too much end play?
