    Need help with 2004 Johnson 175 carbureted--please

Engine has a bad miss when it gets to around 47-4800 rpm and will not get on pad or stay there if it ever does. VRO pump was replaced with no help to the issue. If you keep the motor trimmed down around half way and run around 4500 rpm or below, the miss is not there or it is not as noticeable as trying to get to WOT. All suggestions would be appreciated. Carbs are clean, plugs replaced and compression checks around 120. thks

i just had the same issue with my 2003 175, turned out to be the stator, it was shorting out at med range rpm's. have the electrical system checked. also update the post with the motor's model, and serial numbers, one of the guru's will get back to you.

I agree, test the stator when the engine is warm.

The Model and Serial number of the Johnson 175 that Phillic is having the problem with is as follows: Johnson 175 Model# J175GLSRM Serial# 05043757. How do you test a stator ring?

Ok, read your user name, not his, and could not figure out why you were posting a model number.

Anyone, many moons later and we are still trying to fine tune this motor. We found a fuel problem, fixed it, and got rid of the miss only for it to comeback recently. RPMS wouldn't go much over 4900 which is when the miss started. We replaced the pac , got rid of the miss but will only tach 5100 rpms at 53mph. Everything looks good as far as voltage, fuel . Any suggestions ? thks

Yes it was a CDI pack. So you think that could be the issue ? Bad pack out of the box?

Discussed that with their tech guy and you can imagine the response, "never had an issue with our packs ". Is their anything you think we may be missing ? Compression is 100-105 across all cylinders, no miss , just no rpms's ? Stumped !! Appreciate any feedback. thks

Well, I have seen your exact issue with their pack, and I have put their packs on and they ran fine. I have one on my boat now, and it is fine. If you have a buddy that has the same thing, I think I would try to swap it with a good known one. BUT, also it could be other things. If you are going to continue working on it, I suggest you get a good manual. Ken Cook will have what you need. Just look under the one stop shopping thread at the top of this forum and scroll down. Without one, it will get expensive throwing parts at it and hoping it fixes it.

I have a manual but I think we have covered about every symptom that I can find to look at. I hate to have to take it to a shop which is why I ask too many questions. Hoping somebody has had the same issue or close to it. The "needle in the haystack" issues are tough, expensive and time consuming without a doubt. Appreciate the feedback. thks

Either of you have the ignition analyzer? With a CDI pack and sensor, I'd use the OMC/BRP tool, At least use it get you somewhere close.

Re: Need help with 2004 Johnson 175 carbureted--please (THE WITCHDOCTOR)

A little more to add to the story. Tried the OE pack with no change, still tacking 5100 and around 54 mph. Hit a large wave Sunday and guess what , Rpms went up 5500 to 5600 if I'm not mistaken along with the change in speed. Problem being this only lasted a few minutes and the rpms and speed went back to where it was before the sudden jar. I would think this has to point to a short somewhere but where would be the question ? Ideas ?? I'm wide open for suggestions and appreciate the feedback. thks

Maybe the big wave raised the motor a tad up out of the water and rpms ,and speed went up.
    whats shaft to pad??
