    Carbureted 115 hesitation.

I recently bought a 1994 ranger r72 with a 94 yamaha carburated 115 on it. The boat sat outside covered all winter and I don't believe the engine was winterized. It still had almost a full tank of gas in it. When I tried it out before buying it was hard to start because it was still cold here..in the 40s but after starting it ran fine. Shortly after I bought it it developed a hesitation problem. It would start and idle fine but when you would throttle it to put it on plane it would hesitate and stall. I could work around the problem by hitting the choke once when it would start to hesitate and it would kick in and run fine. I've changed plugs and ran several tanks of gas through it and it seems to be getting quite a bit better..just occasionally hesitates. Should I just leave it alone and see if it completely clears up or do something else....Bob

Having to run the choke to keep it from stalling or to run better is a clear sign of a lean condition. If the fuel sat untreated when stored coupled with the age of the engine I would have the carbs rebuilt. I would also change out the fuel lines, clean the filter under the cowl and dump/clean the oil tanks. You might want to add a 10 micron filter inline just after the tank before the primer bulb. Change if applicable the inline oil filter as well. I had a 130 V4 which is the same power head and set up and had an inline oil filter. Mine was a 92 so I suspect you have one also.

Before running it anymore, especially since you were choking it to keep it running, I would pull the plugs and make sure none of them look lean. I would not run the machine anymore having to keep it running correctly with the choke. If it does clear out keep an eye on the plugs for signs of it running lean.

Once you straiten out the fuel delivery problem I would run combustions chamber cleaner (decarb) through the throats while running. Follow the instructions on the can. As along as you have good compression you should be all set. Run Ringfree in every tank. I would also start running a fuel conditioner like Pri-G.

Solid engine and bullet proof when taken care of. I miss the simplicity of my old carb 130.

</TD></TR></TABLE>I think maybe you misunderstood. I don't have to run the engine with the choke on to keep it running I just have to hit the choke once when the engine starts to hesitate then it runs fine on its own and right now I rarely have to do that so it seems like its getting better

I think he understood you clearly. Anytime you have to touch the choke when an engine should be running normally to relieve or prevent hesitation is a clear sign of it running lean from fuel starvation. Since you just purchased this boat and do not know the history I would do all the things mentioned relating to fuel and oil delivery. If the engine is now running strong you may not need the two carbs rebuilt but doing the other things will help prevent further issues and is cheap insurance. Good luck and enjoy the boat!

Dump a can of Seafoam in the tank and run it. If that don't fix it you will need to clean the carbs.
