    trouble with 2003 150 johnson

First i'd like to say i love this site, i've been reading for a long time and now i need some help. I have a 2003 champion 187 with a 150 hp johnson. I bought it new in 2004 so this is the second season on it and the motor has never run properly. My problem is that the engine stalls out when i put it in gear. if i put it in gear sometimes it will idle for a while before it stalls, but as soon as i touch the gas it stalls out. the only way i can get the engine to run is to rev the engine in neutral (up to about 3000), take my foot off the gas, put it in gear, and immidiatly put my foot back on the gas and go. However the engine runs perfectly and has no problems for the first time i take off in the morning.
My dealer has tried a few things. last summer he changed the jets (im not exactly sure if that is what it is called, but i know it had something to do with the carburator). And for the rest of the summer the engine ran perfect. However ever since the very first use this season the problem is back. Just last week my dealer replaced the primer valve because he said it was leaking and causing the problem, but it did absolutely nothing. The dealer said the leaking primer vavle was causing it to run to rich which dropped our rpm causing it to stall out (engine idle speed in gear is 600 rpm).
If anybody knows what is going on i would greatly appreciate the help. My warrrenty is up at the end of this season so i would really like to get this taken care off and be able to enjoy my boat.

Welcome to the Boards! With the motor off, remove the cowl, on top of the flywheel there is a cover with 3 phillips head screws. Remove them and the cover also. Now on the right hand side you will see a roller about the size of a nickel and it should touch a bracket if it isn't touching the bracket adjust it so it will. One other note you could try, disconnect the throttle cable from the linkage and check and see if the roller touches the bracket. If it does adjust your throttle cable with the black adjustment knob. CM

In this picture the roller is correct

In this picture the roller is incorrect.

wow that was fast. I wont have time to work on it untill wednesday. I plan on fishing thursday so I'll let you know what happens. What exactly am I doing by moving that roller over to touch the bracket?

What you want to accomplish is to adjust that roller in the pictures so when the throttles start to open, the spark advance arm starts to move at the exact same time. The throttle arm also has a roller. You want both to move simultaneaously.

If the throttles open sooner than the spark advance, you will have a hesitation on acceleration. If they move after the spark advance, then you have a rough running and very rich mid-range.

Keep in mind that the best way to do this is to remove the throttle cable from the linkage first, and be very careful not to loose the pin that holds it on the linkage. Adjust the roller if it isn't touching by loosening the phillip head screw on the roller bracket. Now you have a base point. Now adjust your throttle cable via the black adjustment screw and keep adjusting until it slips into the mounting bracket and the linkage post. Insert the pin and washer, pull the airbox off and check for wide open throttle plate opening when the hot foot is at WOT/floored. You want the plates perpendicular to the carb bodies at WFO, and they should be, when your done. Put the airbox back on with the straps and you should be ready to drive it like you stole it. CM

OK, i talked to the dealer again today. He told me that after talking with Evinrude he found out that after replacing the primer valve, he has to readjust the carburator settings. He is going to do this Thursday morning. He said he is taking it to the launch to work on it on the water to make sure it works. I really hope this is it. Thanks for all of your input. I will tell him what you guys have said and I'll let you know what happens Thursday night.

Well i got the boat and it is working great. All he did was make some carburator adjustments. It feels great to have a boat that works again. Man was i really getting frustrated. Thanks for all the advice.
