Mine is dumping oil out of the prop! My outer seal is bad due to fishing line! I know you have a inner seal! But don't know if that would cause your problem!

Remove your drain plug and check for water coming out, inspect the color of the fluid. Milky replace your seals in the rear bearing carrier, the O ring and the O rings on the drain/fill plugs. Also drop your lower unit and replace the seals on the drive shaft bearing carrier. Install a new water pump on it while it is off.

I pulled the plug on it the other night. There was no water that came out. The oil was still blue. I just got this lower unit from eddie pope a few months ago. And i have only ran it twice. And pit a new water pump on it when i installed it. Ill drop the unit and see what it looks like. Thanks champ

Your problem is the oring that goes around the driveshaft bearing housing under the water pump allowing oil to seep by it and drain into the water pump cavity. the new improved oring is a softer compound and is brown in color to take care of the problem. If you are still in warranty it is covered. If not, it's not expensive and replace the 2 driveshaft seals while it is apart. A new water pump is a good idea if its more than a year or two old.

+1 and make sure you installed the large seal over the shift rod. It comes in the water pump kit.

Nobody could possibly know what is going on with this gearcase until it has been inspected and thoroughly gone over. This particular "O" ring, being brown or black is not going to make the difference in leaking or not leaking. There are as many possibilities for a leak as there are opinions why it is leaking. When this case left my workbench, it received a pressure and vacuum test prior to shipping, and everything was fine. Seals, whether new or used, can change their effectiveness over time and weather changes. This was several months ago as I recall, and a lot of time has past since.
