Engine smoke and idle Help! (Long, Sorry)

Had my 89 XP150 E150STLCEM in the shop to install hydra steering and tune up/ water pump. I pick it up today and it lit right off when unloading in lake. Just out of the no wake zone, opened her up to findthat it would just barely get up to plane and running VERY rough. Thought maybe engine decarb was still in system so I pushed a little harder. Then it fell on its face barely running 1000 rpms. I let off and it died. Trolling motor down and back to the ramp I go. Loaded back up and back to shop. Mechanic told me that tune up could not make it run that bad. Convinced him to put it on the muffs. He states it sounds fine. I noticed that the top and bottom carb linkages are not moving when he revs. Also tremendous amount of smoke. I shut it off and he hooked up linkages. (bent the H*** out of the rods) said to try it again. Back to the ramp. Still runs rough and smokes profusely. (Whitish blue) Opened it up and fell on its face again. Took the hood off and I reattached linkages and bent as best as I could to get to original position. Got it back to my boat house. Shop put in NGK plugs B7HS-10 gapped .050, I changed them to CHamp QL77JC4 gapped .035. Thing still smokes very bad. Left a big cloud hovering all the way across cove. What else could be causing this?? Any takers??

You did the right thing changing the plugs!!! I'll defer to the gurus on the other.

Sure, You still have tuner in it? If you have a sweet smell that's the tuner. Your gap is wrong though should be .030. .035 will work though. Take off the airbox and disconnect the cables at the motor. Check the position on the middle carb where the throttle roller touches the cam follower. the roller should have a clear hose over it and it should touch the short hash mark. Make sure your carb plates are going fully perpindicular when you manually move the middle carb's linkage. Snap the carbs a few times to make sure they are closing all the way. Set your throttle roller to touch the small hash mark. Move the throttle linkage manually to verify full function and opening of the butterflies, also make sure that the timer base arm on top of the linkage arm is hitting the timing stop on the front of the intake. If this is all good, try and attach the cable if it won't go on, adjust the black trunion screw at the cable where it attaches to the intake hold down.

The smell is more oil and kerosene type smell than sweet. I will try and adjust linkages tonight. The smoke wories me though. How long before it should clear up?

Not long about 15 minutes at a high idle, 1800 RPM or so no longer than 30 mins. But it does sound like the smell of some type of a decarb agent. Once you smell BRP Tuner you know it for the rest of your life .

I have had it running way longer than 30 minutes already and it still smokes profusely. Am a little worried now. I tried the setup you suggested and had to adjust the follower a bit and bend the linkage to get all opening the same. The tanks are very low on fuel (E). Since I premix the fuel (alittle rich sometimes) maybe there is alot of oil in the tank bottom?????? Going to fill up tomorrow and see if that will straighten it up. Is this a common occurence or am I just lucky?
This engine has ran like great for the past 3 years. I am an auto mechanic and was going to do this myself but since lake house is in a diff city figured I would have someone else do it and then I could just fish. Lesson learned.

You shouldn't have had to bend the linkage at all to get them the same merely loosen the retaining screws on each carb ear, snap them each a time or two and then tighten the screws. This is all part of a sync n link. That is the bad think about premix sometimes you over mix the oil some time you under mix. there should be no oil in the tank as it should all mix together well. If you are an auto wrench bring your IR temp gun and shoot the head temps they should be around the 140* range after about 3 minutes at idle. if not replace the thermostats. The oiling/smoke issue could just be an air temp thing, but you can re-torque the heads at 18 Ft. lbs in a clock wise starting in the center inside of each head.

does this motor have the enrichening vale type choke on it where you manually turn the red valve? If so look at it to see if it got put on manual choke.my 96 200 did and it ran like you say and it will smoke profusely..why would a mechanic bend linkages ?you'll probably need new ones to get the carbs to work right together..if you do make him get them for you..

I done all the things you suggested. I had 144 degrees after 5 min on the heads. Retorqued head. Still lots of smoke and runs rough, will not idle.

Re: Engine smoke and idle Help! (ChampioNman)

Finally its fixed. Had it back at mechanic today. Said I would probably need to ohaul the carbs. I figured I could do those. Started taking the carbs off and when I pulled the small hose running on the top carb got shot with fuel. Followed hose back to enrichment valve. Everytime I pumped the primer bulb it would shot out a stream of fuel directly into the intake. Called the mechanic and got the owner and he looked on my reciept and sure enough they had put a new one on. I disassembled and took the plunger out of the solenoid and there is a spring in it that was assembled backwards from what I can tell. It was holding the plunger open allowing free flow of fuel anytime the primer bulb was pumped and I assume as long as fuel pump was working. Anyhow reassembled and runs like it should and no smoke! Thanks guys for the help!!!!
