    Bass Boat finish Question

OK guys here is the thing

I took My 1999 21 SS Extreme to Anglers Choice in Martinsville VA. I was told For 1800.00 we can make it look like new. Well the Yahoo who did the finish did not do any pre-sanding ( i can see the outlines of the St Croix stickers I had placed on the sides) so he sprayed, well here it is lesss than a year later and its peeling all over and I'm getting that milky white look where I know it gonna peel in no time.

What is the best way to get rid of the BS finish that they sprayed on?
It truly looks worse now than when I brought it to them. Thought if I could get it back to the original finish I would wetsand it myself and take it to someone who does good work and have it sprayed. this leads to question 2 what should I request as a spray coat?

Thanks for your time guys (sorry to vent but I wouldn't let Anglers Choice change my lower gear oil) The finish is not the only thing they messed up either.

    Thx in advance ..... PJ

    Re: (JeffA)

I'm pretty sure Anglers Choice has a guy to do that kind of work for them and the fault does not fall on AC, anyhow if it did Sandi or Nick would make it right. Sorry about your boat but I find it hard to believe that a top notch dealership and a board sponsor would screw anyone over. On the other hand I have not ever had a problem with AC or Greene's(partner dealership). Both are great to work with and have awesome customer service. my $0.02

Re: Bass Boat finish Question (pjmartin947@mchsi.com)

Problem is guys I live in Delaware and its an 8 hour drive, already made the trip three times, to get where i'm at today. The reason I used them is due to dealing with them in the past which was fine (they treated me good). Seems now that they are too busy to have individual care. Nick made them fix one area already and told me to bring it back down that he would have the guy shoot it again as long as it wasen't bumped (the finish)on anything. Anyways at 500.00 to 800.00 a trip just to have the guy shoot it (S.O.S.) I don't think so. To do it right I will do it myself,

Anyway what finish recommended, best way to get rid of the old?

    thx .... PJ

Re: Bass Boat finish Question (pjhandyman)

Ok guys well I got alot of the new finish off with a razorblade scraper (came off pritty easy) There are a few (very few) areas where the new finish actually stuck. Preping now to start wet sanding my old finish for re-spraying.

Gonna research what finish to use on the net. I was gonna load some pics (kinda a before/after thing) but I'm not very good with computers and I'm lost when URLs and stuff are talked about.

Anyway thx to all for the thoughts and replies.

Don't know how bad your finish was that you had to have it sprayed with a clear coat. That should be used as a last resort.

Wet sand with 1000, then 1500, then 2000. Get a high speed buffer and 3M Finnese It and follow it up with a quality wax like Maquires Flagship. You should then have a finish that is not only show room but will last for years. JMHO

Re: Bass Boat finish Question (fastman151)

Like said above, it sounds like they sprayed it with CLEAR COAT. That is a problem a lot of people fall into when refinishing a new boat. That stuff may look great for about a year or so after that it looks worse than it did before you spraed it. I would call AC marine and talk to them, but it seems you already have started and have the mind set on doing yourself, ( which is fine), you know they always said "if you want it done right, do it yourself." As far as respraying, put GELCOAT back on not CLEARCOAT. But i feel if you wet sand properly and buff, wax as stated before, you will be very happy with the result. post pics please. Good luck, TC

Re: Bass Boat finish Question (1993stratos274)

What fastman151 said is the best way to make the boat look like new! You can google "shipshapetv" and they will be one of your best resources for restoring, they might even have some videos. The problem with putting a clear coat over gel coat is that the gel coat has deep pores that fill with wax from the factory. Wet sanding will just drive the wax further into the pores. There are some new chemical washes out that are supposed to work if used properly after sanding. If you try to shot a clear coat i would find and use one of these chemical washes. Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Re: Bass Boat finish Question (pjhandyman)

unless I misunderstood your post I would be getting my $1800 back plus incidental costs involved....including extra trips made to AC. Every dealer makes mistakes and it sounds as if you given them 2nd and 3rd chances.....now would be the time to get my $$$ back.

Re: Bass Boat finish Question (SkidMark)

My understanding is an offer was made to redo the boat and because of the distance that offer was refused.
