I took the boat out for a spin today. It started fine, ran fine until I started heading back. At WOT it felt like it was going to stall. It jumped down to 4500 rpms and would not run any faster. It would then jump up to normal WOT for a second or two and then jump back down to 4500 rpms. It felt like a transmission in a car slipping.
It idles fine when at idle.
Could it be one of the carbs shot, spark plug bad, bad wire?
The motor is a 1999 Johnson 225 hp HO.

When was the last time you ran it, any type stabilizer in the gas?
I run it once a week and sometimes twice a week. I dont add additives to the gas because I usally burn alot of gas and always put 20 gallons or so every trip. It is using oil because I top off the oil tank every time out.

I'll put my money on a powerpack going south, same thing was happening to mine last year and replaced the powerpack and problem went away.
I think I would yank the plugs, do a compression check and go from there.... sounds like maybe some trash under one of the needles on the carbs to me, but better to be safe than sorry!
Hey guys, can someone run this vin and model number for me to see what prior work if any has been performed on this 225 Johnson Venom? VIN J225STLECS MODEL G4436080 Looking at purchasing a 99' Stratos with this engine and am a little concerned about running a Johnson as I've always owned Mercs. Thanks in advance...Scott
That Johnson is a Good Motor, It does sound like a Powerpack going south to me also.
