    99 186dc setup help

Hey guys I have a 99 186dc with a 99 merc 175efi. 25p tempest on the back. Currently 3" below pad. Only maxing out at 5100rpms though. 15psi wp at wot. Anyone else set a similar boat up before? I'll be at the lake this weekend so I can tweak it around

I would think you would want a 23 or 24 tempest on that thing. Gotta get those R's up so you don't prematurely cook your motor.

My buddy ran that combo w/ a 23P Tempest. It ran sweet and through its full power band. I believe you are pitched a bit high as WaYoop stated.

    I run this hull, but w/ a 150 Johnny. I bought it w/ a 22 P Raker and it runs sweet, too. I run 5500 RPMs w/ no jackplate. I manage around 59 mph solo w/ load.

I have the same setup but 96 year model. I am currently running a 25P Tempest A45 & 5500 RPMs and 63MPH on GPS fully loaded, full fuel, and two people. My holeshot is weak but I have received a few suggestions about plugging the exhaust holes on my prop that I have not had time to try yet.

Yeah all 3 of mine are plugged. Hole shot is great!

I have some free time this weekend so I'll start toying with my jp to see where it gets me.

Would it make sense to go down on pitch if my holeshot is fine? I always heard to go down for better holeshot; up for more top speed.

What kind of speed are you running? Are you sure your WOT is all the way WOT? Like I said, I am getting higher RPM's and higher (20-23) PSI water pressure.

The TB butterflies appear to be opening up the whole way. I consulted with the merc forum and they said to try toying with the setup. Only checked speed once via phone gps and it said 51mph which would be about right for 5100rpm. I need to get a service manual and start checking stuff but I'm not that far yet.

Your setup is about the same as mine right now and we are running the same prop.. I'm at 3.5" below pad I have tried from high enough to where my water pressure dropped to 4" below the pad with my JP setup--Trimmed out my top speed was never below 60. Even with 4 people and fishing load I am running mid-upper 50s right now. I'm no expert nor mechanic but sounds like you aren't getting all your power.

I had the same set up... 186 dc with a 175 merc efi ....it was 3.5 " to the pad .....always ran in the 62-64 MPH range (GPS) this is an awesome combo. I ran a 25p tempest plus all holes with the large plug. Holeshot was good unless I had 3 big guys and a full well...even then it was ok.

It sure is a sweet setup. I can't wait to plug those holes up and test it out. I think I will do that after work today.

Great boat. I had a 2000 186. Boat would run 66 GPS all day long. Heres the ticket.

    6 inch plate.
25 Tempest Prop-Worked prop by Boger Props. Tons of lift.
    3.25 below pad- May vary
Trim extenders- Kept inside the bracket
    20 PSI

It was a probably the most nimble Champion boat that I have owned. The ride was fantastic.

I would make sure your motor is healthy. You should have no trouble turning that 25.
