Rooster Tail ? for Patt Goff

Had my 1992 184 DC with the Evinrude 175 Intruder out this weekend. With a 24P Raker 3 blade ss prop, it was shooting a good 8' rooster tail at WOT and full trim. Motor is flat on the transom and prop shaft is 3 1/2" above the pad. I could not get but about 5500 rpm and 58 mph by the speedo. Did I have too much up trim or what was causing this? Is this a good thing or bad thing? Please let me know what
    you think. Thanks.

I'm not pat, but I can tell you that is a bad thing. your rooster tail should be about the height of your motor cowling. If the prop is dinged up at all it won't grab much. I have a 24p raker as well and with the jackplate all the way down it was fine, but I move it at all and it was blowing a huge rooster tail with no bow lift.I sent it to mark to add some cup to it and it helped.

Prop shaft is 3 1/2" ABOVE pad??????????

3 1/2" below pad is the starting point. Go check again.

You are at full throttle operating range. The range on your motor is 4500-5500. Rev limiter is 6100. Your motor's HP is rated at 5000 RPM. Start push 5800-5900 and your internal parts will try and become external parts.

It is 3 1/2" below pad, it was a typo on my part. So what do I do also is 5500 rpm
where I should not go over in WOT? I would have thought it to be at least 5800, I just did not know.

If you were running a big block V-6 5800 is good you aren't you're running a small block V-6.

So 5500 RPMs is the top or should I run say 5200 RPM and if so what prop will push the boat 60 mph and not shoot a 8 foot rooster tail?

Do you have a water pressure gauge and a jack plate?

Re: Rooster Tail ? for Patt Goff (ChampioNman)

I have a PSI gauge but it is broke and the motor is flat on the transom. From what I have learned, the small block at 5400 rpm WOT with the 24P Raker at 58mph must not be the prop for me, maybe the 8' rooster tail was because I had it trimmed up too high but further trim down seems that it would run the rpm even higher. I am learning as I go, sorry to be a pain. If I went to the 25 Tempest with +1 on the little holes plugged would it do ok even without a jack plate? I am trying to do the best I can with limited funds. Thanks to all of you that have helped me.

*SOMETHING* Does not add up, not at all.

If your motor is flat on the transom, you'd be 6" under pad, not 3 1/2".

So, let's make sure we're all singing off the same page...
Basic setup no jackplate: 2nd hole up with most loads.

I'd be very suspicious of that prop. Do you have any access to something else? 24 raker would be the choice, but that doesn't mean THAT 24 raker. 85% of your performance is the prop, until that's right, nothing else matters.

Make sure there isn't any junk, transducers, speedo pickups hanging off the bottom.

184/175 intruder is a hoss setup, 65 mph is just normal, so let's find normal for you.

    Re: (pmgoffjr)

Thanks for the help. I will remeasure again on the prop shaft to bottom of the pad and check to see what hole the motor is mounted in. I will post back as soon as I can. Thanks again.
