    Bearing carrier

This will be the fourth time I have had to take the carrier out of my 200 Johnson due to either the seals or O-ring leaking. Anyhow, now that I have had to replace the carrier once already (due to the scaring form the tech changing the seals out created its own leak) its now stuck and cannot be removed for some reason. And on top of that, it now has a crack in it, so.... That will be another pop to the wallet that I can't have. What in the he*% is goin on???? I borrowed the tool that the local BRP dealer uses to pull the carriers out with and cannot get it out. It comes so far then stops???????????????????????? Rusty, I am on the verge of sinking my boat some where man, I have had enough. HELP, Please!!

Sounds like the housing is warped, an causing your sealing issues. Eddie Pope can help you out (Gearcaseman) but I really think your best bet is a used LU.

Thanks Championman, as always, I appreciate your kind words! My thoughts on the carrier situation bring up several possibilities, first, it won't come out, this is more than likely a gall being picked up at the locking tab locations, very common to these cases or this case has been subjected to a very severe "hit" that has created a warp in the housing and "locking" it in. Since it's already cracked, cut the 4 bracing areas with a reciprocating saw, and remove in pieces, then check the inside area of the housing for indentation from the 12-6 o'clock positions. This is extremely noticed on high speed rigs spinning "surfacing" props, with excessive engine heights! To have as many problems as you have had is very unusual, check your P.S. for being bent as well, something is way out of alignment somewhere. Also, have your housing checked with the factory alignment tool, this will be time well spent. Hope this help's. Eddie

    Re: Bearing carrier (gearcaseman)

Thanks man, I finally got the carrier out last night. Found a puller that was long enough to fit against the P.S. and reach the bolts that I ran in to the tab holes. It then came out with not much effort. I really don't like the slide hammer. It gawls up the supports bad. When the top support ( top tab hole) cracked, it cause the top of the carrier to become out-of-round and there for it cause the top of the carrier to bind a bit against the L/U when comming out. As far as the motor, it has never been hit or hit anything so...... Not saying there is not a problem with the housing, but the seals went out for the first time bout a year and a half ago, I then used a slide hammer and removed it, replaced the seals and problem fixed. Then bout a month later while at the lake with the boat, I noticed some different noises from the motor ( me just being paranoid ) took it a tech at a marina and he said yeah sounds like it might be a bearing. So 500 bucks later found nothing wrong, nothing! He put it all back together and said ride hell out of it. The sound was really nothing so I didn't let it concern me. But while he had it apart he changed the prop shaft seals once more for me, but in the process he scrapped the inside edge with a screw driver where the seals set and it later started leaking. So then after chaning the seals (without knowing this) once more. I then bought another (used) carrier (after the second set of seals started leaking) that come out of a motor that come apart (gears), they promised it was OK so I put it in. When I put it in the inside O-ring rolled on the top and it started leaking once again. This is where I am now at, so now that I have destroyed the 2nd carrier, I guess I will buy a new one, Just that $250 sounds high just for a carrier. By the way the prop shaft looks good and true. And the noise went away with the second carrier.

    Thanks though guys

    Re: Bearing carrier (Travis)

Travis, try to locate a used carrier at some of the dealers in your area, most all shops have these things laying around. Make sure whenever a new seal is installed, some sort of sealant is used around the outer perimeter area where the seal will go, this is one of the most leakable areas of the case. By the way, the screwdriver marks on your old carrier are no problem if this is done. Hope this saves you some cash!!!!!!!!!!! Eddie
