The Radio Shack serial-USB adapter kit is reported to work very well.
There are others that work OK but also some that do not for unknown reasons. At least Radio Shack has a liberal return policy.

So the interface on the E-tec outboard is serial? RS232? My laptop has both usb and serial ports, so this is no problem. Is there possible to buy the software and cable somewhere? What can be done with this software? I would like to change from XD50 to XD100 oil, but I quess it would be easier to just bring it to the dealer.
I am, however, interested in the cable/software anyway, to play around with :)
Thanks!
Some dealers will sell you the software and other's won't. I've got the software for Palm and a friend of mine was able to make all the setting changes he wanted to his ETec with it. What's odd is that I've read that the software for laptops won't allow changes for non-dealers, it's suppose to only allow the consumer to see into the emm.

Hi People, while on this subject, is there any software around that will show on a laptop the display like NMEA 2000 shows on a Lowrance GPS/sounder, what I would like to do is take an old laptop, mount the LCD on the deck and show all available gauges....is it possible or just a pipe dream. ps converting the laptop will be no hassle as this is what I do for a living, its the software that the problem.![]()
I use "BELKIN" on my Acer Aspire 3610 and it works perfect..

No software available to the public just yet, but it is just around the corner according to our Lowrance rep. I doubt that you will ever see a universal type software program. Most engine mfgrs. systems are proprietary and they take extra steps to keep it that way unfortunately.
Without the proper training, this software can be misused. That's why it's only available to dealers or service centers. When you take it to the dealer for the oil usage change, ask if there is a recent software update. If so, request a copy of the download before and after the upgrade. This is very useful info to keep in your records. And VERY impressive to a potential buyer, if needed?

With the interface cable from the factory or DFI Technologies plus the expensive software (#777231) on CD from a dealer, you can do exactly what you want. It will show engine data and fuel consumption on E-TEC engines, and only engine data on FICHT or DI engines from 2000 and later. The laptop will only show engine data, not any sounder or gps info.
It is my understanding that the unregistered software version that you purchase does not allow making any changes to the motor, just monitors the data.

I agree that some CANBUS/NMEA 2000 software for a normal PC would be very cool. I would need have that both in my car and my boat then ;) Not sure if my Etec 90hp have NMEA2000/canbus support? There is propably a few years until we see something really good, since there is so many standards. But I am surprised that there is not more software out already, correct me if I am wrong, but there is nothing?
I have a old palm pilot, do you guys know witch palm the evinrude software works with? A picture of the setup would be really cool.
How expensive is this #777231 software? I know a evinrude dealer, and I am very sure he would order me anything I would like. And how much is the cable? Just a rough approximate.
Thanks!

Your 90 E-TEC is not set up for NMEA 2000, only 115hp on up.

The display screens of most laptop computers are generally not very easily read when in direct sunlight, and this diminishes their value as a display device on a boat where lighting conditions are very hard to control.
I have not seen a general purpose computer application that can display data from a NMEA-2000 network on a computer display. The cost of the NMEA-2000 documentation and certification process is probably too high for a casual experimenter to invest in.
There are devices which can connect to a NMEA-2000 network and output a serial data stream, and you could easily ingest this data into a computer via its serial port, but interpreting the data and displaying it is another story.
Given the modest cost of the Lowrance LMF-400 gauges, it looks like the easiest way to access NMEA-2000 data.
Was looking at price on a DFI Technologies plus the expensive software #777231 and the part nr. has been change to #763724
What's the difference between #777231 and #763724. The #763724 is more expensive.
