    Water pump impeller

    Dopey question:

I was fishing on a beautiful day in the Gulf of Mexico, trolling (electric) around the shallows, when my motor started bumping rocky bottom. I pulled out of there, got to deeper water, then trimmed the motor up to see how much damage I did (the engine had zero scratches beforehand.) Anywho, I left my motor trimmed up and fished for a while. I started the motor (out of the water.)

How much impeller damage do you think I could have done running for 5-10 seconds?

    Thanks.

I've done that lots. Still have good pressure and flow. I think as long as it's not totally dry you will get away with it a few times.

I have done the same. Trimmed out the motor in shallow conditions then start it up and hour later and wonder why it sounds so loud. Then you look back and the prop is out of the water. You said you dit it once. I am about on the 10th time during a six year period with the original water pump. I do plan to change out the water pume the winter. Bottom line is you are OK.

Thanks, all. This boat is new to me.

I will change it out this winter anyway.

There will still be some water around the impellar to lube it, just don't do it a lot.
