Alarm sounds when key turned on?

    Model: J30ELENR
    Ser. #: G 03009354
While running, the alarm came on and the engine ran bad. I had to hold the choke in to make it back to launch. Water was coming out the engine strong so I don't think it overheated. I put the boat up for a few monthe. Today I changed the gas/oil and allpied ears/hofe to the water inlet on the foot. When I turn the key on (without cranking) the alarm sounds constantly. I crank the engine and the engine starts fine but idles a little rough after I give a little gas then let off the throttle just shy of neutral. The alarm sounds the entire time but the engine seems to run fair. What couls this problem be? I tried pumping the bulb at the gas tank and it doesn't get really hard but evidently gets enough fuel to keep running.

It sounds like you have a couple of problems. First off, disconnect the wires from the oil tank where it connects at the engine. Does the warning horn stop now when the key is ON?

It does not have an oil tank. Oil/gas mix. It's a 30 hp outboard about a 92 or 93 model.

Damn! I better get my eyes checked, I "read" that it was a 130, silly me, it's hell getting old, and there wasn't even a 130 back in '92.

Does the alarm quit when you disconnect the tan wire on the temp sender on the cylinder head? if so, it is fauty and has to be replaced. Back in those years I think there was a bulletin about changing the water deflectors after removing the cylinder head.

Your drivability problem sounds like a fuel starvation situation, most likely caused by dirt or varnish deposits inside the carb. If it will only stay running by priming the ball, then you may have a fuel air leak and/or a weak pump.

    I understand the eye thing....LOL
I'll check on the temp sender wire. I noticed that when I pump the bulb that gas comes out between where the fuel hose pluggs into the engine. Maybe I need to purchase a new hose assembly? If the running problem persists, I'll get a carb job done.
My main concern is the constant alarm though...I'll let you know when I get a chance to check the tan wire.
    Thanks

Chances are you only have to buy the new fitting, not the whole hose.

Ok...I disconnected the tan wire and the alarm (horn) still comes on when I turn the key.

When things were normal, did the horn beep once when you first turn the key ON? If so, then it's very possible that the electronics inside the horn are faulty and the horn needs replacement. You can check it by removing the black ground wire from the horn. If it still beeps, then you have a short in the tan wire somewhere.

If you have an early horn that does not have a self-test beep at startup, then there is a short in the tan wire circuit somewhere. Check the wiring harness on the motor for melted or chafed areas and the boat wiring for any screws that may have penetrated the wiring cable or abraded areas.

Good luck. Let us know what you find.

Yes...before this problem...when the key was turned, the horn made an initial beep.
The horn is in the throttle assembly...correct?
I'll check this out and get back to you.
    Thanks

Ok...I did remove the tan wire from the horn and it still goes off as long as the key is turned on. When I remove the ground wire from the horn...it does not go off when the key is turned on.
Hope this helps to clarify what is wrong.
    Thanks.

    Re: (mkbaquet)

If the horn stopped beeping with the black wire removed, then the electronics inside the horn for the self-test beep are bad. The horn can still be used as a warning signal with the black wire cut and taped, but why not get a new horn and have an alarm system that works the way it should.

Seahorse...can you help out one more time...LOL
I searched the net for the part that I need...the "horn". I find what appears to be my part according to my model # and year but it doesn't look the same. The part that I am looking at from my boat has 2 metal spade clips on it. 2 purple wires connect to one of them and 1 tan wire connects to the other. Plus it has a black ground coming off of the horn. The ones that seem to be the part that I need all have a single wire harness coming off the horn. This leads me to believe that I am looking at the wrong part. If you copuld point me in the right direction...I would be most appreciative.
    Thanks

    #585992, about $65

The horn has been redesigned and superceded several times.
