How many of you Allison owners have stress cracks in the top cap of your boat?
How many of you Allison owners have stress cracks in the top cap of your boat?
What's a stress crack? Oh wait. . . . I've seen those on other boats.![]()
On another brand (which will remain nameless), I've seen cracks in the gel coat where the factory has beat the sh_t out of the hull with rubber mallets to break it lose from the mold. (seen on a new boat) The factory didn't take care of their molds and the hull wouldn't pop out of the mold. The workers beat the inside of the hull so hard in various spots, it made what looked like shattered impact lines in the gel coat.
I've not been around Allison boats that long, but I've not seen any type of crack in the gel coat. I'm sure cracks can happen on Allisons, but I've not seen this on any of the boats lined up on the beach at Clifton. The probability of seeing stress cracks on Allisons is significantly lower than other boats. Of course, you get what you pay for.![]()
I think the possibility of having stress cracks (excluding rough treatment by the retail buyer) has alot to do with several variables including assembly process, design, length of time the hull cures, fit of top cap/hull/storage boxes, quality of materials, and experience of the craftsman assembling the boat, just to name a few.
Of course, when you take a boat out of Lake Erie and jump 10 foot waves all day like the Dukes of Hazzard jumping a bridge, that's another story.![]()

I actually have some very small cracks around my swimrails. That is it though. my boat is pretty old (1990) and is a Comp Pro. My 1995 Stratos (great boat) had them worse and I only had that boat for 6 years.
I have absolutely no stress cracks and my boat is a 1999 XB2003.

I do. One spot.... on an '88. But I'm going to blame it on a previous owner probably running to hard in rough water with the trolling motor twisting and flexing on the cap.
Under normal use you may see a few around the rear swim hand rails and around the drivers cup holder in the inner liner on the 2003's. The few others I've seen were from total abuse. Some guys can bend an anvil.Allisons are not indestructable but they are tuff.
Stratos, looks like the previous owner may have wacked a dock or like you said , had a loose T/M flopping around. Make sure the deck hasn't seperated from the hull in that area.
Lee, you mean the cap from the hull?
When I hung the OMC troller on it I was WAY up front under the deck all looked good under there, and when I re-did the carpet not long ago the front deck looked fine.
Haven't pulled the rub rail center out.
..... bend an anvil, ..... that's rich. ...![]()
Yes, deck=cap.![]()
You can look under the rub rail to see if the epoxy is cracked or broken loose. You can also take both hands and grab the bottom of the rub rail and lift up to see if there is any movement.
I have got a few real small ones on my 91 2002 around the front of each rod box in the corners where it goes from the flat carpeted area to the gunnels or interior walls.
Wonder if that is still under warranty.....LOL.
Can' find any on the Hull or transom.

I had a friggin WAKEBOAT loaded with Kids and Ballast bags swing in too close to the dock I was tied to while I was loading out my boat,, it was too late when I ran out to the dock to try and keep my boat off the dock post, but I was not too late to deliever some good verbal education as they came back around..... I hate them boats, there oughta be a law they need to stay in the middle of a lake somewheres ,, but then they could not show off in front all us then..

those were probably caused from hitting something with the troller. like a dock .
Whether due to impact, trolling motor or both, I got to believe that's pretty good being it's a 1988 "light weight" boat. Not many 21 year old boats can brag one relatively small area of stress cracks.
The reason ally's don't get stress cracks very often is because any smart own of one knows to say out of rough water they aren't made for it and can't take it. Take a boat that was never been in rough water IE small lakes. and another boat same year, model everything thats been on erie, potomac, upper bay, kentucky, and what not one's not gonna have stress cracks and the other will. no matter what boat it is.
God grant that i may fish until my dying day and when it comes to my last cast i then most humbly pray that when in the lord safe landing net i\'m peacefully asleep that i be judged as one good enough to keep.
I fish the Potomac 100 times a year as well as the Albemarle and Currituck Sounds...try again.
