Getting ready to pull the trigger on a truck, but then i saw some F250 Crew cabs

I'm in the market for a truck and have asked some questions on here and got some good feedback.

I have always owned ford gassers and was going to go that way, until.... I have stumbled across some F250 diesels 04-06 that are close to the price range of some of the f150 gassers i was looking at.

I want to go look at a 05 & a 06 F250's i found before i buy a gasser. But since i don't know much about these Ford 6.0 diesels i did a search and was surprised to see so many negative comments.

Both the 05 & 06 have around 75k miles. Should i be afreaid of these trucks? It sound like the EGR's have bad performance, but from the breif research i did i see there is a EGR deletion you can do to by pass it.

I don't want to get into a truck that i just have to keep pouring money into.

If you can find one that's got the EGR delete kit and had the head studs replaced, go for it. That makes them pretty much bullet proof. Otherwise, stay away.

I don't know much of anything about diesels. I would love to have one. But any diesel is going to require you to put a lot of money in it, compared to a gasoline engine truck. The regular maintenance,in itself, is really pricey. Of course, the upside is the diesel engines last much longer too.

ive got a little over 160k on mine, with no probs. it has the egr delete and head studs though. an oil change runs about $60. a full service (oil, fuel filters, transmission pan drop/fluid and filter change, air box breather filter) runs me about $250, but I only do that ever 30k miles.

I've been looking into them also since my neighbor just wrecked his and the ins. co. will sell it back for $2800. and it needs about 4-5K to fix the sheetmetal damage. Or I could do it myself for about $1500 without paint.
Anyways I talked to a few mechanics and the say yes you need to do a EGR cooler or delete, but if you don't plan on putting a programmer on it or doing some heavy pulling you will need to stud the heads, or risk a blown head gasket at the minimum.
Bad part about buying it from someone you don't know is how hard have they ran it.

The 6.0 Ford was the first generation emission and computer controlled diesel, so there are things that need addressed. If you are going to buy one get a code reader ,and go on diesel forums and find out what to check for. Set back some money to do the bullet proof fixes. They love to work, preform as good or better towing 4 or 5 ton, dailey driving short trips they dont like. do research on the many ford diesel sites and make sure its what you need. Use only Ford filters they are patented and aftermarket are different and dont work. If you dont check one out good you could be out many thousands for repairs. But if you do the research and get educated you will be alright.

Unless you REALLY need a diesel I would stay far away...everything on a diesel is 3 times the money to fix and maintain compared to gasoline.

Get an 05+ F250 with the 5.4 and it will do pretty much anything you want. In 05 they went to the 3v engines with 300hp. You will hear people bash the 5.4 in the Superdutys but these people have no clue what they are talking about. Unless you are pulling 10,000+ lbs everyday, you don't "need" a diesel and it will only cost you more. I had an 06 with the 5.4 and pulled with it plenty and never had an issue. Remember 15 years ago when the most powerful diesels had less power than the current gasses? The same people that bash the v-8s's now were praising the "power" their trucks with diesels had then.

Maintenance costs are not that bad Oil change intervals should go twice as long as a gasser, then there is a fuel filter every 15-20k miles. the 6.0 pushed me to a Chevy Duramax, the 6.4 also kept me in a Duramax. The new diesel is supposed to be a good one.

The f-250 I think is one of the best looking trucks. It all depends on what you ( hobbies, side work)
need. If you got a tractor, pull car trailers, or anything that gross more than 8500lbs I would go with 250. You can get decent gas mileage with tuner installed. And ride comfort is better pulling over 65mph, but will also get you tickets.

You may want to reconsider the diesel. I have had diesels for the past 4 trucks and sold my last one a 99 SD F250 and ordered a 2011 F150 EcoBoost with max tow and it pulls 11,200 lbs. It pulls my 26' beaver tail and 50hp Ford tractor/tiller/brush hog just as good as the SD did. The EcoBoost max tow long beds extended cabs are built in KC on super duty axles/frame/springs. The rest of the F150's are built in Detroit. I have 10K on it and am saving 60 cents a gallon on fuel.

    Go drive one!!
