    1999 yamaha vmax ox66 squeaking

i have a 99 vmax ox66 thats is making a squeaking noice at idle. I cant find any common factors that go along with the squeak. no issues with HP. I think I have a small miss at 3k-3.5k rpm range. its hard to tell. Any suggestions on what the squeaking might be?

Does it sound like rubber on a steel shaft? If after you run for awhile its gone? Does it do it at idle in gear or out? I know this going to sound really dumb but fill the lower unit as in make sure its full. pump oil into it till it comes out the upper hole. Its along story but mine would do this when it was low and I could always add 10 to 12 ounces and the noise was gone.

it sounds sort of like a pully or belt squeaking. It never does it while the engine is cold. It is usually after I have ran it for a while. It just comes on all of a sudden. It started doing it around 9 am saturday, after i had ran it about 20 miles. You can't hear it once you get on plane. Usually once it starts it will do it the rest of the day. The next time I take it out, as long as i ease around with it , it may not even do it. Must of the time it is after a hard run. Once it starts it does it both in gear and out.
    Thanks

ck the cover on the flywheel to see if it is rubbing.

I have the same exact behavior on mine.

If the lower unit was low, wouldn't this always occur, rather than after "warming up"?

No mine was very intermitant. And instead of asking questions about if thats really it why not just fill the lower unit and see if its gone? The first time mine did it was late in the year. About a month later I was winterizing the boat I drained the lower unit and noticed not that much came out. The next season about the same time it did it again. Filled the lower unit it took 10 to 12 oz. This time I took lower unit to dealer for servive they pressure checked lower unit and found no leak but recomended replacing seals they did and the next year same thing. Then they told me due to Yamahas prop shaft seals that both face the same way it was not unusual for there to be some fluild loss. Wish they would have told me that before they took my 350 dollars to reseal and replace waterpump.

@hooken203 So, did that resolve the issue? Anyhow, I'll definitely check the lower unit. Thanks for your reply !

Yes filling the lower unit would fix the problem. Did it three times. Then I just got in the habit of checking it every couple months

Interesting, as I just had the lower unit serviced. Sounds like the service dept didn't fill it 100%. Is there a specific process to follow e.g. fill, run the motor for X amount of time, and fill again ... repeat ... ?

If you just had it serviced then that proably is not it. But to fill it the way I do it is to remove the lower plug get your pump or bottle hooked into that hole then remove top plug and force oil in until it runs out top hole put the top plug back in before removing your supply. If you do it that way less will run back back out. Make sure you use the same type oil that is in it. Not a good idea to mix type or weight oils
