Yamaha 200 HPDI vs Merc 175 ProXS

Guys need your opinion on something that has been bugging me.

I have a flats boat with a 2002 (2.6) 200 HPDI. It is a light boat and with a 21 inch three blade I run about 56 mph. My buddy has the same boat but newer, a 2007, with a 175 Pro XS and runs right at 60 with the same prop and load. My boat may be a little heavier than his, different owner is now building the same boat, but it bothers me that I can't run the same speed as he does. I have heard that my 200 is a true 200 HP and that the 175 ProXS is right at the 10% limit. My motor has been checked out, she runs like a top so what gives?

Do you have a jack plate and have you tried raising the motor a little? That prop may respond differently on yam vs the merc.

Thanks Rich but no JP on either boat. Both boats have a 23 inch transom with a 20 inch motor so no need for a JP, she will run in 10 inches of water all day long. I have the motor on the same hole as my buddy, second from the top.

What gives is no 2 things are the same. You mite try swapping props with your buddy and see what happens because you can have 6 brand new props that are all the same, and they will all run a little differently.Other things to consider are the weight of your load and the hull itself. Most boat makers have more than 1 mold when building the hulls, and if one has a little more hook in it,it WILL be slower. Also you mite try what Rich suggested on raiseing your motor because lots of times Yamaha's like to be ran at a higher prop height than some other motors.Just remember no 2 things are the same.

I have been told that the 175xs are as strong, even stronger, than most 200's. I dont know, but the mechanic said their torque and rating were around 220-240. who knows?
