power trim problem. Pump does nothing.

    Hi,

I have a problem with my trim. Motor is a 1998 200 ox66. The trim worked fine all day until i pulled up to my camp for the night. I hit the switch to raise the trim and it does nothing. I can hear a click under the cowling that I assume is a relay but the trim pump itself isn't doing anything. No click, hum, rattle, suck, nothing.

I did run through some rough water today, but the trim worked fine after.

I ordered the parts to replace the seals in the trim last night. It has gotten low on fluid a few times but i've never run the pump dry.

Does anybody have any ideas? It sounds like it may just not be getting power. This always seems to happen on day 1 of 4 day fishing trips.

Use a voltage meter and check to make sure you are getting power all the way from the battery to the trim motor.

While holding the trim button either direction, up or down, take maybe say the butt end of a screwdriver or anything hard enough to tap the trim motor without knocking the paint off to cause a little vibration in the motor. It may come back to life for a while. The brushes are probably getting worn would also be my guess. If you take it apart you will probably notice quite a bit of black dusty looking residue inside the motor housing. That is from the brushes wearing away. You can probably replace them yourself if you are mechanically inclined, but they(the brushes) are rather expensive, but not nearly as expensive as replacing the whole motor or having it done at a shop!

    thanks for the replies.

Well, yall are going to think i'm crazy, but the trim started working almost as mysteriously as it stopped.

Since the boat was it the water, I couldn't look at the motor yet so I decided to take the cowling off and look through the electrical stuff just to see if i could see anything obvious. Everything looked fine, so I put everything back together.

The trim still didn't work. Then I cranked the engine and it worked as though nothing had ever happened. The battery was charged and connections were good the whole time. I guess it was just a freak electrical thing.

The trim worked fine for 3 days and worked fine when I replaced my trim seals today.

No, I don't think your crazy, it'll stop again sometime. Mine does the same thing. It will even work slower at times. All the trim motor needs sometimes is a little vibration to keep it going. Your's and mine are both probably in need of brushes!
