    Water temp gauge worth it?

Is a water temp guage on the E-tecs worth the cost or are most people relying on the overheat warning and water pressure guage?

I read some stuff about running an Optimax in cold water and they suggested a warm up, but without a temp guage, how would you know when the thermostates open?

The idea behind using the water pressure gauge is that water pressure drops off before the temp goes up. So if you monitor water pressure, you are ahead of the game. Generally on most outboards you know the thermostat is open when the idle comes to its lowest set point. Engine tend to run higher until reaching a specified rpm, then the rpms stabilize. In cold water you normally seea little vapor off the tatle tale because is is warmer than the incomming water . Water temp guages are ok, but do not rely on the overheat warning as this is the last in the series of overheat scenarios. Using a jack plate, a water pressure guage is a must for properly setting the engine up to make sure it is not to high and losing water pickup which results in pressure loss.

    Hey Rudetech.

Is it recommended that you give the newe-tec some warm-up time? If so, about how long?
