lower unit ??? for the guys in the know

I went outside today to fire up the boat and let it run since i haven't be able to take it out in a while..any how i put the boat in gear to make the prop spin and to let it run like that for a few seconds and it sounded kinda bad like a ( rattling noise slash knocking kind of sound) coming from the lower unit.. anyway i gave the motor a little more gas in gear and it didn't do it as bad.. Is this something i should be concerned about or do they just do that. I just had the lower unit serviced with new lower unit oil.. just wondering if i have a problem that needs looking at or if it just how the sound which i what i am hoping for

also when the motor is off and i put it in gear the prop will not spin..out it back in nutural and it spins fine.. I have a buddy that has a honda and even when his is in gear you make make it spin but it make's a clicking sound when doing it.. Starting to worry some..

I think the knocking idling in gear is normal. Water provides resistance and you will experience very little lash like your getting when in the water. Also being a 92 there could be a little play that pronounces itself a little more especially out of water.

The prop should not spin while motor is off and in gear.

If it runs well, is quiet in the water and the oil looks good and clean with no filings, I say you’re good and have no reason to worry.

You should not put it in gear out of the water. There is nothing to cushion/load the shock of the gears (no load on the prop) when the prop is out of the water.

I thought lower unit gears were designed with saw tooth gears so that when one goes from WOT to dead in the water (kill swich pulled) the prop will still spin and not act like an anchor in the water as you glide to a stop. Mercs were built this way and I'm on my first Yammy but the logic is still there. I'm going to have to try it on the water and see if mine does it. That is what is happening with your friends Honda.

I have had 3 Yamaha's and I know the last two a 130 and a 6 hp (can you count the 6....LOL) you could not spin the prop when in gear and motor off. Not sure about my 225 HPDI but I would think that in gear not running the drive line is locked together in that as well .
