I'd strongly recommend everyone with throttle/shifting cables that are more than a few years old check them closely for corrosion.

Mine failed, well, more like fell apart yesterday. I went to throttle up the motor to get up on plane, and the rpm's barely moved from idle with the throttle at max. When I looked back, I could see the throttle cable bulging in the rigging tube just outside the motor. We were able to get it going after a little trial and error. My wife would slowly throttle up as I sat on the livewell and held a choke hold on the cable bundle to keep the cable from bulging out. We did this a few times as we went throught the slow speed zones and made it back to the ramp safely.

Once I got it home, I found the throttle cable sleeve was basically corroded into little pieces. This happened right on the bend in the cable bundle going from the motor to the transom. The bend that moves alot when the motor is turned or tilted up and down, and right where I'd expect it to fail.

I called my good friend, and mechanic at work, and he recommended the Yamaha cables instead of the Teleflex cables since he found them to work more smoothly and last longer.

I called my local dealer and luckily they had the ones I needed in stock. My 2400V has 18' cables installed, in case anyone needs them, and the 18' Yamaha cables list for $55 each.

I figured since I was replacing one, I might as well replace them both, and I'm glad I did. When I pulled the shift cable out, it was also showing heavy corrosion in the part I assume was down in the bilge area, but not falling apart yet.

With a little help from my wife, we were able to snake them through pretty easily. Overall, I'd rate this project around a 6 in difficulty and can be done with basic tools. There can be a little adjusting involved also. I set it running on the hose for basic shifting and throttle. I'm going to water test it and fine tune it in the next day or so.

I have the cables all connected, I just need to install some new rig tubing tomorrow and clean up the mess.

So go check them and save yourself the headache I had yesterday instead of fishing.....
