I just replaced the brushes in my trim motor. I've bled the air out of the pump. Now the trim motor will run for a few seconds and quit. It won't work up or down. Then a few minutes later it will start to work again. This has me stumped . Any suggestions?
make sure the tilt/trim limitrt on the switch hasn't got out of adjustment first, if it is ok, then sounds like you got internal issuies with the trim motor...
Remove the leads to the trim motor and hit it with some jumper wires to the blue and green wires to the motor. 12V from a battery, hook to the leads and see if the motor goes up and down by reversing the leads to the motor, if not the motor is shot. Time for a new one.
The motor runs fine with jumper wires. The trim is very slow and noisy going up. And the motor locks up every few times I try it. If I open the valve and lower it manually. it will work fine again for a few minutes. I didn't have any problems before I replaced the trim motor brushes so I'm at a loss for what could be causing this now. I have filled the fluid and bled the air and greased the pivot points. Any suggestions on anything else to check?

And did you have the armature tested and the commutator bars machined?

Yes everything was done correctly. I have rebuilt several motors but this one is giving me fits. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Sometimes you just need to buy a new one no matter what you do.
Any chance there's a bad relay ?

No, if it was a bad relay, the motor wouldn't lock up when it was wired direct via the jumper cables. Sounds like an armature or assembly issue to me.

Does the motor lock up when on jumper wire ? Not sure from this post. Had a problem with mine last year and it acted real flakey. Mech was sure it was the motor untill I insisted we change the relays. $44 vs over $400 for the motor.
it hasn't quit on jumpersbut neither up or down works . Whats the odds of both relays going at the same time. It seems if I wiggle the outboard a little the trim will work again for a few times.

If you disconnect the electrical leads from the trim motor and use a battery, can you raise and lower you engine thru the full range of trim and tilt ? If yes, your trim motor and pump are likey not at fault and you have either bad relays or faulty wiring. If not, you have a bad motor or pump.
If you look at the trim cct diagram, you will see that BOTH relays are used for up and down. If either is bad, it can affect both directions. Change both at once, they aren't expensive and if they don't fix the problem, throw them in glove box cuz sooner or later...
If you have trim switches in several locations like I do, (bow, steering wheel, the old one in the hand throttle that is now just a gear shift, side of the motor), any of them can cause you grief if the wiring is corroded, pinched or worn.
I may have figured it out. The wires were pretty rough at one point. So I cut them off there and jumpered it and it works fine. Hopefully when I get a good splice between the wires it will continue to work. Thanks for everybodies help. If it doesn't work I will post some more.
