    DT 150 revisited

    Is everyone nice and Cold!??!

Does anyone know the gear ratio of the lower unit and the max recommended RPMs for an 88 DT 150 SS?

The folks at http://www.piranha.com/Suzuki_Outboards.php say it is

    Gear Ratio: 1.86:1

    Min WOT RPM: 4500
    Max WOT RPM: 5500

    (not verified)

As some of you may recall, i typically hit 6000 RPM at WOT before i spun the hub.

Bassdevils, That motor is what is called a long stroke, unlike a mercury. The gear ratio is 1.86:1 and I would not run it over 6000 very long.
5500 is recommended, I have ran mine at 5800. but tried to prop it
for 5500 RPMS under full load WOT. Good luck...

    Re: DT 150 revisited (bassdevils)

According to an old manual I have for a dt150 ss the normal operating range is 5,000-5,600 rpm. Gear ratio 1:86.

I generally run a 24" Turbo which puts me just about 5,600 rpm. If I'm running a heavier load or need a better shallow water hole shot I'll drop down to a 22" but then I watch the rpm's on the top.

    Re: DT 150 revisited (drfish)

I think i've been running this too high, im typically 5500-6000. I'm probably going to get a tempest plus. Going with a more modern prop, (stronger, less give in the material) do you think this will drop my rpms a little bit?

I'd be interested in knowing how these engines perform with a modern prop also. I've always used the stock Suzuki's and Turbo's. Although I've never been real unhappy with these props, people have told me I should look into better props. Which other props will fit on the Suzuki? or do the hubs have to be changed?

    Re: DT 150 revisited

I have ran a tempest for years now (actually my son has the boat now),
    anyway, I went from a suzuki 24P to a tempest + 23P and gain 10 mph.
I could not beleive the difference and the lift. Try and borrow one, you will
be very pleased with the prop. If your turning that many RPMs you might
try the same pitch as your suzuki prop. I had to drop a pitch to keep the RPMs where I wanted it to be. I had it on a 1988 Ranger 390.

Re: DT 150 revisited (EtecRanger 205)

ETEC, thanks for the helpful advise as always. I dont have anyone around that i can test their prop with, noone in my bass club has a temepst, thats why I keep asking about it. I want to make sure i get the right one the first time.

This could sell it for me...from your last post you said you had to drop the pitch to keep the rpms where you wanted it. So are you saying by going to this modern prop, my RPMs will drop slightly if I stay at 24P. Thats what I want, I think im running a little bit above where i should be at. I would like to stay away from 6000

I can't remember what boat you are running the 150on. But if its big, you will have better luck with a 23p than a 24p. It's a hard choice to make, keep checking Ebay and you may find a tempest prop fairley cheap. Yes you will need the hub kit, but you only need to by one as it will fit all tempest props that take the turbo-hub. If you want more performance from your boat with out spending a lot of money, go the tempest route.
You just need to figure out what pitch. You could go to Marks prop page and give hime all the infomation, ie: WOT RPMs, Boat, Motor, height from pad and he can give you an idea what pitch to buy....good luck and keep in touch.
