    Motor cuts out while trimming

Does not seem noticeable first thing in the morning but later when I take off trying to get on plane the motor cuts out when I hit the trim. As soon as I let go the trim it takes off. Runs wide open no problem.
I checked my battery connections and found neg. in the wrong order big VS small and VERY slightly able to move cables. Put cables in the right order and tightened well. Hope that does it

Re: Motor cuts out while trimming (Triton19x2)

    Fraser:

That connection could account for the problem- should be:

Engine cables installed FIRST, remaining lugs "Largest to Smallest" and finish off connection with a STAINLESS LOCKNUT (do NOT use Wing Nuts).

Also... see the following post regarding batteries:

Re: Motor cuts out while trimming (Triton19x2)

Mine did the exact same thing and after checking/cleaning all connections it was the battery. Take the battery and have it tested. Mine showed no signs of wear and was a little over a year old. It was a Sears Platinum too.

Re: Motor cuts out while trimming (bloodman)

Thanks Bloodman, I have had the battery load tested and it checked out fine. I will run it again this weekend and see what it does. I did not have this problem with the Interstate 1000CCA but I have added electronics since then. However!! I have been turning them off every time I turn the motor off and still have the prob. Voltage shows 13 - 14 when motor is running but when I hit the trim it drops to 12

Motor did it again today for most of the day. Made one WOT run and the next time I took off ( for the ramp) it did not seem to do it. What do you make of that?? Could it be a coil issue? I still have the originals and mine is in the Serial # range.

Read that battery thread - I bet it is your cranking battery.

The trim pumps draw a lot of power - and right after hole shot the engine has not had much chance to charge the battery. I am thinking this happens most when you trim it out right after hole shot, but if you have been running on pad for a few minutes, it won't do it as often when you hit the trim?

Yes you are right, but I have the Sears Platinum 31 series and had it load tested with no problems. Not sure where to go from here

    Fraser:

Have you verified the battery connections (as denoted in RED text in the above quote)? VERY critical!

If so, I'd be looking at the battery cable connections INSIDE the engine cowling (especially the GROUND cable where it attaches to the engine block below the starter). Sometimes, excessive paste-loctite will prevent the bolt from pulling down far enough (bolt may be torqued to spec, but the cable may still be loose under the head of the bolt).

Thanks Don, everything is good @ the battery per your instruction but I did not know where the ground was under the cowl.....now I do. I will check that and report back. Thanks

I am putting my money on the battery. Take it someplace else and have it tested. Mine did the same with the same battery.

    Fraser:

Did you PHYSICALLY check the GROUND CABLE connection on the engine block (down BELOW the starter.... you need a 13mm socket to remove the bolt, clean the lug of the cable, clean the block surface, reconnect, and verify the cable lug is not moving under the head of the bolt).

Don't "presume" that because the bolt is tight, all is well. That may NOT be the case.

I also agree that having that battery LOAD TESTED somewhere (for accurate results) is a good idea. It's easy to fall into the "The battery is new, so it must be good" syndrome ("New" does not necessarily equal "Good").

Thanks guys. I have had the battery load tested and it checked out perfect. I have also made sure cables @ battery are in the right order and are secured with lock nuts NOT wing nuts. I have NOT loosened the ground bolt(s), cleaned, re installed so that I can do. In the pic I attached, can you see the bolt in question? Just want to make sure I am looking at the right one. Sorry for all the questions about something that is probably a simple fix.

Bolt is NOT visible in photo. It's below the starter, underneath the pitot sensor and several cables (you'll have to do a little digging to get to it).

Man, I hope there isn't an issue with this battery. I just dropped $260 on one and haven't had a chance to use it yet.

That is it.... make sure the cable can't be rotated on the bolt when finished.

If that doesnt do it get a different battery and try it for a while. Borrow it or whatever. I dont trust the load testers. Just me I guess.
