DETWEILER (and other) Jackplate users- Check ALL Jackplate hardware regularly!

Although this applies to ALL jackplates- just a quick reminder to those of you running plates to REGULARLY CHECK FOR ADEQUATE TORQUE ON <u>ALL</u> JACKPLATE FASTNERS.

With the Detweilers, be sure to check ALL allen head screws also (including the ones at the top and bottom of the cylinder or tube slides)- AND the four screws on each side HIDDEN under the sliding plates.

We've caught a few of them recently that were "loose" (one recently that was missing)...

Remember- MAINTENANCE (including ensuring appropriate torque for ALL engine mounting fasters) is the OWNER'S responsibility.

Good idea to ensure this is part of (at least) your Annual Maintenance Plan.

I posted and discussed this very thing about a year ago. A method that I done, was to apply a mark on the bolt, and one on the nut inline with each other. I used a metal marker that would not wash off. When I Launce , removing the transom saver and installing the plug, give all bolts a quick look. I used a eye catching color. After a few launches it became automatic. If something looks strange you will notice it.

A few minutes to check fasteners with a torque wrench beats an extended stay in a hospital or worse.

Can you list the correct Torque setting?
for engine mount bolts and transom bolts?

Always refer to Engine and Jackplate installation instructions to determine ACCURATE torque values.

Common torques as follows:

Engine or Jackplate to Fiberglass Transom Bolts: 55 ft. lbs.

ENGINE to JACKPLATE: 90 FT LBS.

MOST 1/2" Jackplate Hardware: 80-90 Ft. Lbs (Consult jackplate owner's manual for specifications specific to YOUR jackplate).

I'm guilty of not knowing about the 4 under the pump, mine are gone and pump motor now don't want to move. May be a combo of rusty brushes and bent shaft but it's not really binding up. Just barely making contact...

Good advice

I recently changed the seals on my Detwiler, had to use a torch to heat up the area around the bolts to get the bolts to break loose due to the lock tite. I also reapplied new lock tite during reassembly.

I always check all bolts on engine, jp and steering before launching
