can a bad rectifier damage power pack?

'97 Johnson Fast Strike - about a year ago tach started climbing up to 6500 rpm even when only at 1/3 throttle - did this for a couple of weeks and then everything wad fine.
A month later the power pack went out. Replaced it and everything checked out as OK by my mechanic. - (Yes, the rectifier checked out OK as well)
This week - power pack goes out again.
I tried searching this board and got lots of answers about recitifers and powerpacks but cannot find a clue as to if they can cause damage to each other.
Both parts are around $225 each so I don't want to replace something that may or may not need to be replaced.

Could it be that an intermittent problem with my rectifier is blowing my power pack - or is it just that the power packs on these go bad every year or so??

Any help would be appreciated! - (this board is tons cheaper than my mechanic)

If it shorts out then yes it can fry the rectifier, as well as the stator too.... Did yo put an omc pack on or aftermarket... Thought I would ask, because rusty will ask the same question... lol...

    Welcome to the BBC.

Never say never but its highly unlikely the rectifier cooked the pack, if you buy a BRP pack it has a one year warranty.
