    What Rifle

Gonna buy a new rifle for, for deer, and want yalls opinions. Rarely hunt anywhere I shoot over 100 yds, but want the capability to shoot longer range given the opportunity. Pros and cons of your favorite. Not wanting to spend a fortune. And a scope for a good price. All mine are leupolds 3x9, but if you have one you like better for less let me know. By the looks of pics most of yall hunt more than you fish anyway

Great minds think alike. Remington 700 in 270. But mine is left handed. However, you can get some nice gun/scope combos at Academy. And a Savage 110 is a good rifle at a fair price. Had one in 243, wish I still had it.

And find out when they are having a gun show in Alexandria or Shreveport. You can pick up some good deals at a show.

.308 is a good caliber too. .270 shoots so much flatter but the model 700 is the most accurate out of the box rifle i have ever owned.

Jeff all are gonna b opinions, but any of the guns listed above are going to exceed your needs. All ballistics for what ever caliber you choose can be obtained and can be manipulated into doing amazing shots at crazy distances. Brand and size dont matter. What some people forget when they see shiny metal is ( does it fit or is it comfortable ). Good luck with your search.

Yea i've used that model 700 too and it's a sweet gun, but the Ruger M77 is also very accurate as well and has a better feel to it then the Rem,thas what sold me.My nephew has a .270 Savage that i helped him set up and sight in,To me a .270 is just a good all around gun in any make, just need to find which one feels right and your set.

We could go on all night about which caliber is best. My advice is to get a common caliber. Something that you can pick up at WalMart or the country store. The best caliber is no good if you forget your ammo at home and nobody at the camp shoot it and WalMart doesn't have it.

Personally I love my Brownings... Own several A-Bolts in diff calibers all toped with Leupold 3x9x50 VXIII's. My favorite is the 7mm WSM. But as said above, all mentioned are great guns. To each is own. But BROWNING for me!!

Barry you bring up a great point. When the Short actions came out they were all the rage. The ammo is at least at an average over 50 buck for twenty rounds. Now people dont like them so much and you dont see them getting sold like they used to. Another thing is also value after the sale. I shoot Browning not only because i think they are cool but they keep or increase in value over time as a collectable, depending on model and condition of the gun.

My neighbor has a 7 mm Remington Mag, there ain't nothing that has pissed me off enough to want to kill it with that caliber gun.

    Re: (lasabre)

RUGER 270 with NIKON MONARCH, check out these scopes, for the price they are hard to beat. A guy was at Houma Auto parts and bought a Burris scope for him and a Nikon Monarch for his wife. Well eventually he had to use his wifes rifle. He stated afterwards that there was such a little difference between the Monarch and the Burris that he will never spend that much extra money again on a Burris. Its worth checking out, I have had one for years and will continue to use them.

I bought my son a Marlin in the new 308 Marlin Express. Like it so much, I use it when he doesn't hunt.

+1. I also used to have a Browning A-bolt medallion .270. Both are great guns. As far as scopes, Nothing but Leupold for me.

    Re: What Rifle (Mike_z71)

Another vote here for the Ruger 270. I'm on my second Ruger, first is a 30-06 and my wife gave me this one for christmas one year. Both are extremely accurate (three shot groups you can cover with a quarter) and have given me no problems. I just did a trigger job on my 270 to lighten it a little.

Any of the guns mentioned are great guns and will do good, the remingtons are more apt for customizing (easier to find custom parts for), if you do go with the Remington make sure it's the BDL Model.

    Re: What Rifle (Jeff La)

Stick with a .30 caliber!! 30-06, 308, 300 etc!! Much more choice on bullet weights!! I think the heaviest you can get in a 7mm mag is 175gr and around 150gr in the 270!! You can get up to 220gr in the 30-06!! But for whitetail 130gr bullet is plenty enough!! It's just what each of us like! And i am a Ruger fan as well!! A good friend of mine just did and extremely amount of research in buying a new rifle and scope!! According to him and all the places in the Baton Rouge area!! Alot of the new rifle's that are out right now, the top brands remmington, browning, ruger, and so on!! They are not as quality as previous years!! And that was also said about the Leupold scopes!! Anyway but after his 2 weeks of investigation he went with a Remmington bdl 300 win mag with a 56mm Schimdt and Bender scope!! Good Luck!!! So that's another opinion to confuse you!!

I absolutly LOVE my Savage Model 10 with ACCU-TRIGGER 308. It has taken 3 deer since last year. I took 2 last year my 14 year old took one this year. I have a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 BDC reticle. You can get one with a scope for under $500. the scope I have runs about $170. I love Remington but the price you pay for the Savage is a better deal. More BANG for the BUCK. I hope this was helpful.
