06 225 XS Pro - solid beep on occasion when restarting after a brief shutdown

This only seems to happen after going slow (10 mph or so) for a ways, then shutting the motor off for 5 - 10 minutes. When I restart it has the long solid alarm.

Last night was a good example, I am finally seeing a pattern. We came in after dark at not much more than a fast idle for about 3 miles. Shut it off at the ramp and talked to a guy fishing off the dock for a few minutes. I backed the trailer down and when I restarted it the alarm went off. I turned it off and restarted it again but that didn't matter. I let it run for a couple minutes and the alarm quit.

My temp gauge barely moves and it has a good strong pee stream. If you run it 'normal' it never does this.

Why does it do this? (the water was up to 50 degrees too)

It sounds to me like the motor is getting hot.. What a lot of people don't realize is that the motor will get hotter once you cut it off because there is no water going through the motor.. Sounds to me like you need a new water pump or impeller..

What's your water pressure at idle speed? At WOT (wide open throttle)?

What actual engine temps are you running at (at idle)?

OK, just got home. 3lbs at idle and 25lbs at 65mph. The temp gauge just moves a little off the cold mark. (No smartcraft)

No problem tonight, I flew across the lake, idled a short distance to the ramp. Started it again to put it on the trailer and everything is dandy.

It only does it when running real slow for a long ways. Then beeps on the restart.

I'll pick up a new one this week. I bought the motor used in Sept and haven't done anything to it. I did change the lower unit grease before winter, it was like sludge but there wasn't any water in it.

It had 175 hrs on it when I got it. I don't know the hours now but my GPS says I have ran it 674 miles as of tonight.

I have a 2006 225 pro xs and mine does the same thing. Not sure why this happens. I did notice the pro xs lower unit has an exhaust port on the lower unit where my standard opti did not. Also the lower unit drain plug is behind the prop. Mine will overheat on key up if I idle 10 minutes or so.

Your water pressure is within specs. That being said- if you don't have CONCRETE evidence that the impeller/gaskets were replaced within the last year- REPLACE THEM.

Check your battery and battery connections. The ABSOLUTE MINIMUM spec battery supply is 1000 MCA or 800 CCA (must be fully charged at this spec at ALL TIMES). If you're going to run accessories that rob from the cranking battery while you're fishing (hint hint)... you'll need a larger, stronger capacity battery.

Connections at the battery must be CLEAN- engine battery cables installed FIRST, then remaining lugs "largest to smallest". Very important- finish off the connection with a STAINLESS STEEL LOCKNUT (do NOT use wingnuts).

A battery voltage issue can, and will cause your complaint.

For a list of some batteries that will exceed the requirements of your engine- look at the posts pinned to the top of this forum.

Hi, I just thought I would update this thread.

I changed the water pump impeller shortly after I started this thread and it has been perfect ever since.

The water pressure really doesn't look any different on the gauge but the alarm never goes off.
