What's the difference between torque master and sport master?

I have came across the option of a sport master lower unit with the torque master gearing in it. Is there any difference between the 2 besides the looks? I have a 1998 Champion 203 with the 1998 Mercury Promax 225 (2.5) on it, it had the torque master on it that is not rebuildable. My insurance wants to put a sport master casing with the torque master gearing in it. Will this work or is the Sport Master going to hamper my heavier boat.

Torquemaster is for applications running slightly elevated engine heights, on boats requiring extra lift, and operating at speeds BELOW 85 MPH.

Sportmaster is a SURFACE-RUNNING gearcase for engine mounting heights 4.5" or more above standard mounting height, on rigs running in excess of 85 MPH.

A Sportmaster case will NOT be suitable for use on your Champion.

Thank you very much for the reply, I am going with a new motor deffinately now. I am still staying Mercury and 2 stroke. Between the standard optimax 225 or optimax pro xs 225. Which would you put on this boat.

2 friends recently purchased 225 pro xs for their 20ft rangers and Jaco gave them the option of sportmaster or torqumaster lower units stating that the sportmaster would give them about a mile an hour faster. They both chose the sportmaster. Was this a good choice because I think they will be replacing lower units pretty quickly.

You might want to double check the above info, and make sure the choice wasn't "Verado Style or Torquemaster" (which would be viable choices).

The ProXS models are NOT OFFERED with a Sportmaster Gearcase (and I don't believe there are any Ranger 20' boat that would be suitable for a Sportmaster either).

Jacos ad says 225 proxs or 225 proxs with torque master no mention of sport master.

You are right, they will be replacing l/u's. No way, on a 20' ranger, will a sportmaster be faster. It'll probably be about 5 mph slower. The SM + heavy boat = no lift.

You sure the options weren't fleetmaster vs. torqmaster?
