It's lasted 12 years. Have it checked.

I'd prefer an 02 or newer, but if it checks out, I wouldn't be scared of it...

Ask if the EMM unit is new, re-build or never worked on? If the unit has not being worked on, the clock is ticking. The cost for the repair will be $800 if you take it off yourself and send it off for repair or about $1,400 if you let a marine service repair it. You can work with him on price if he is willing to drop the price after he tells you what you need to hear. Don't take his word, as to see the invoice for that repair. What type of boat is it?

    Good Luck.

So was my motor. I ran it for 6 months before the EMM started giving me problems. If you decide to buy this boat, make sure you change your plugs before you start fishing. If they go bad, your boat motor will stop running with no warning.

If you are not wanting to learn about the motor and have an ongoing project, best to stay away from it. If the previous owner had EMM replacements, a new oil pump and possibly fuel pump, along with all the recommended services performed, then it might be OK, but it's not worth much money.

If you don't know the history and it has low hours, stay away.
