Rev Limiter - Johnson 200 Carb

Is there a rev limiter on a 99 Johnson 200 Carb motor? Also if there is how do you know you are hitting it? Does an alarm go off or do you feel the motor cut out? Not that I want to hit the limiter if there is one but I want to get more speed. I have a 23 Gade on it right now and I have a 25 Gade comming next week. Right now I turn the 23 5700RPM at 54 MPH. Hoping the 25 will get me over 60 then next is the jack plate.

The rev limiter is programmed into the PP and will not shut the motor down. And generaly No alarm. No you don't want to hit the limiter as it is about 500-1000 R's above Red Line and you do not want to run it that high. Internals will become Externals. You have to remember your boat configuration, as most of your weight is forward not aft on your hull. It is tough to get a good balance on a FNS. Are these speeds GPS or Speedo? I would hope GPS but you have room for improvement. CM

Those are GPS numbers. I just got in a 25P Renegade to try out this weekend so I will see how that goes. Hopefully make a few mph faster.

Re: Rev Limiter - Johnson 200 Carb (THE WITCHDOCTOR)

Really? It is that high? I was doing some reading on another forum and they are all talking about hitting the limiter and they are trying to find different props to try so they are not hitting it. Most of them are Merc guys but still. I would think that if I hit the limiter on my Johnson I had better be wearing kevlar because it is going to come apart.

The limiter is 6700, do not try to turn this motor more than 5800.

I ran a 19.5 foot F/S with a 200 Johnson for several years. You need a prop with
lots of bow lift. I ran a 26 Raker for a long time....53/54 MPH at 5200-5300 rpm.
Switched to a 24 Raker worked to add lots of lift and improved to 60 mph at 5800.
You need to spin that brute at the recommended WOT to get all the power it will make. Also, the F/S need to run the prop a little lower than a bassboat.
