need lower unit help opinions, info on 1984 Evinrude 150 hp Limited Edition

just bought a bass boat w this motor-skeg is broken off but the motor seems to run strong.Im not much of a motor guy as far as boats go.I know what the skeg is for-am goin to check out another 20" lower unit w good skeg for 100.00-guy says good condition. What should i look for? Is the vertical running splined(on end) shaft suppose to turn freely? Or freely with RESISTANCE? And i guess the impeller is easily accessable at this point-guy says its "5 screws" and should replace since its so easy right now.--Im pretty good fixin mowers,cars,handy,etc...and would do this myself as long as i know any tips i need to know to do it.Any secrets to doing an impeller-i saw somethin bout someone sayin to spin the prop to set impeller "in place" or something like that. And is the impeller also the water pump? Thx

The impeller is just that...an impeller. I would replace it with a kit, which includes the stainless backing plate and new housing. A good welding shop can fix the broke skeg, but for that price for a working unit, I'd jump on it and fix the other for a spare...JMHO The link above will give you the right directions for installing the impeller. It's in blue just below the BBC logo on the E/J forum main page. Or click here.

Re: need lower unit help opinions, info on 1984 Evinrud ... (Bassmeister)

thx-also -i just noticed that the 4 main bolts line up perfectly for the new lower to be put on, but back where the unit tapers(above the prop) ,on the new lower unit there is just 1 hole for a bolt to fasten unit to motor but on existing unit there are 3 bolts in place there. The 1 hole on new unit DOES line up with 1 of the hole placements on old unit so i know it can be put on and its a perfect match beyond THAT...Thanks for any input.

You should have 2 holes to secure in the back. Did you notice the one right above the trim tab? The tab needs to be removed to see it.

Re: need lower unit help opinions, info on 1984 Evinrud ... (gearcaseman)

on existing unit- in back, there are the 2 holes but neither is up under the trim tab-the hole youre talking,on MINE,actually"splits" between the body and the cavity edge under the tab plate. On the new unit, all the HOLES line up with existing unit's(existing one is still on boat-am measuring)but the bolt hole is up in the tab cavity like you mention-so basically the trim tab cavity "starts sooner" on my new unit-1/2 in maybe but im pretty sure its al gonna line up ok cuz theres a slight angle difference between the two at the final angle/end point that will make all seams come together ok,etc...Ive done a little homework the last day or so talkin to a few local guys and am gonna have a guy look over Monday-compare,maybe put on the new (used) unit.Right now i have very slightly bent prop shaft and completely worn off skeg!!(not done by me-just bought boat).Hopefully i get a nice fix here.Unit only costs $100.00-will probably put in new impeller.I hear that is good procedure while you have a unit off /out of motor, yes???

Being a new to you unit, I would invest in the kit rather than just the impeller. However, if the stainless backing plate isn't grooved or rough, maybe you could get away with the impeller alone....JMHO

Make sure you aren't getting a V-4 case. Measure the OD on yours and the one you are looking at. A V-4 case has a smaller OD than the V-6.

Bolt up pattern would be the same. The O.D. Fred is talking about is the diameter of the round section of the unit right in front of the prop.

Re: need lower unit help opinions, info on 1984 Evinrud ... (gearcaseman)

thx gearcaseman-Im assuming you mean right where the prop butts up against the unit-that circular /round part/end of unit area? I did get same diameter for both.Right about 15 inches. Also,Im 99 percent sure that all is good as I took unit to local freshwater marina and parts guy said it was definitely a V6 and another guy said pretty much the same thing.Am going tmrw to have it gone thru, pressure tested,etc...-thanks eveyone for input
