    Replacing rope on Trolling Motor

I did this and it worked excellent. When replacing the rope on a Motorguide Trolling Motor before it actually breaks, take some braided line & sew the old rope to the new rope, make sure its strait, then pull it right thru. This took me about 5 minutes.

Then there is no need to tie it to the locking slide hole, just run the rope thru the hole & tie a overhand knot in the rope. You may need a small washer to make sure it doesn't pull thru. then when you pull on the rope the knot will pull tight agaist the locking slide hole. Works Great!!!!

Re: Replacing rope on Trolling Motor (Team Mud)

I sure wish I would have seen this post before today. Two weeks ago I did it the old fashion way!!

After 2 1/2 hours and a few broken items in my garage, I managed to replace the worn rope after cutting off the old one.

    I WILL remember this one...

The key is, you have to be at least 10% smarter than whatever you're working on... thanks for the education!!!

slide a 3" long piece of shrink tube over it where it comes thru the hole, mark it, and then pul it back toward the back and heat shrink it on.. the idea is to have the heat shrink tube covering the rope where it comes thru the hole to keep it from wearing.

Mine broke this weekend and almost dumped me in the lake. When I got home I took one of those blue plastic wall anchors cut it to fit the locking bracket hole. I threaded the rope through the plastic piece, through the bracket and rest of the trolling motor. The plastic anchor will keep the rope off the metal and keep it from fraying.

all you need to do is use a steel cable like you tie you're dog up with that has the rubber like coating on it. you will never have a broke trolling motor cable again

Re: Replacing rope on Trolling Motor (BLUE RANGER)

Just redid my MG with 1/8 vinyl coated cable. that didn't work to well. The cable kept hanging and wouldn't allow the motor to lock in the down position. redid it with 1/16 and it works great so far! Dont think I have to worry about it breaking

How do you attach the cable to the hole that you normally tie the rope too?

As periodic maintenance on my MG, I spray marine CRC on the pivots & slides. With everything lubed up there is less effort & strain on the rope.
