Getting fish out of the livewell

I learned this trick from a walleye fisherman. When you want to get your fish out of the livewell don't just reach down and try to lip 'em or grab 'em by the back. Simply reach down to the bottom turn your hand palm up and slowly feel around, when you find a fish simply stick your hand under its belly and lift straight up like your balancing the fish on the palm of your hand. For some reason they don't flop or jump when tickled on the belly. I have held fish up like this for photos and they stay that way for 20-30 seconds before they flop.
Almost every time you can pull them out then lip them or dump 'em in the sack.
Works even with toothy old walleyes, just watch out for their gill plates, they are razor sharp.
It works the same when you are landing a fish.

I've done this while landing a fish, but I would never try it when culling a fish or removing my fish from the livewell for a weigh in. We have to keep our boats in the water during weigh in - trailering before weighing your fish disqualifies you. If I grab a fish like that, and they flop before I get my hand to his mouth to lip him, I risk a potential disaster. I use culling ropes - the kind that is just a rope with a piece of styrofoam in one end. When I go to cull, I grab the rope with one hand while sliding my hand down to the fishes mouth, and then I grab them by the lip. I don't like to pull them out by the rope, as most of the time they start thrashing about.
    All the best,

I must be missing something. it works for me. I don't know what the trailer has to do with the livewell. And I pick 'em up this way then lip 'em or drop 'em in the sack I sure don't drag 'em across the back deck or anythingespecially since its not like I'm going to hold 'em up for the tv cameras.

Great tip. A guide in Canada showed me that on walleyes to disgorge a deeply hooked fish. I never thought about using it on bass! I actually put my fingers in the walleyes' mouths to retreive jigs! Never once got bit!! I will be doing this on bass!!

The best method I've observed and easiest method catching on in the Professional Tournament trail is Glory Bags. Check out the website and you'll find it amazing and never a dead fish ever unless you get a bleeder.

The main purpose of this Protection Device is for the well being and safety of the fish as it is being held throughout the day in a Tournament Environment, or otherwise being held in an aquatic environment.

The fish is kept in a state of ease inside the Protection Device as it is being transported in a live well or floated in the water. The frequent opening and closing of the live well lid does not cause the fish any trauma or excitement.

When the angler reaches in to capture the fish for culling or weighing, the fish is not touch by the hand, only the Protection Device is touched. There is no damage to the fish as it doesn’t have to be chased around the enclosure to be captured.

The structure of the Protection Device is made to allow the fish enough room to stay upright and afloat.

A little too pricey for me!
