I was not happy with the tags with the chains that always seen to break so I was looking for something better. Well some things are under your nose all the time. I am a locksmith by trade and was selling key tags to a customer when it hit me. I took six different colored plastic luggage tags and used shower curtain hooks to attatch them to the fish. They worked perfectly and have about $ 3.00 total invested.
You can also buy a metal stringer from walmart cut the clips off and put different colour zip ties on them, $3-$4 a set.
Colored safety pins work, we use them when there are several people in the boat when we crappie fish. That way if a agent stops us we can tell him whos fish are whos.
I have bought two or three sets of tags or more. I like the ones that have clips that look like they came off one of those cheap chain stringers. I take them in the shop and grind the tips down to a point so they don't tear up the fish so much when I insert them. I have gotten them with 100 pound mono, chains, and rubber tube between the snap and the float. I like the ones with the heavy rubber/plastic tube.
The chains break, and the ones with mono tangle.
I also have a set with just rubber tube in different colors and a small clothes pin type clip. These come off the fish in the course of the day so I don't use them.
