would anyone be able to tell me the measurement from the mating face of my lower unit to the center of the shift rod trial and error just isn't cutting it.i would also like to know what gear it should be in to take the measuremnt i.e rod pushed all the way down or extended . thanks in advance

That would be @ 21 15/16" with the case in neutral. @ 6 turns down after thread engagement should get you there close enough.
