    telltale flow

(1995 johnson fastrike 150 j150gleom) I installed a new complete water pump in early spring. The water pressure at fast idle was around 12psi and the telltale had a real solid stream of water. The pressure at wot was 24/26 psi. Just this past week I noticed that the telltale went from a hard stream to a spray and the water pressure at idle dropped to around 5psi but pressure at wot is still about the same. I have always had a stream of water coming from the telltale but never a spray. I even removed the telltale looking for an obstruction but found none. No overheat alarms. Iam going to flush motor today with a hose. Do I have a problem here and what do you think it could be. Btw, motor is only been in the water 4 times since install. Thanks Mike

Junk in the discharge somewhere. Take the tell tale off and start in on the muffs that should blow the junk out. The inspect the indicator it self there is junk in there somewhere.

I removed the nozzel a saw some junk. there was some kind of orifice with four little holes in it. I had to remove the exhaust grommet to get at it. Three of the four holes were almost plugged. Put it all back and started it on muffs and my stream is back. While it was on the muffs I noticed some water coming from the lower part of the midsection. I don't think that's right. For a better description or the area I took a picture and when I figure out how to post it I wll. I'm thinking water tube leak.

I was hoping to get some comments on the picture in the previous post. I'm pretty sure I need to find where this water is coming from. I haven't removed the lower unit yet because I was going to take grandkids fishing at local lake (trolling motor only) tue or wed of this week coming and don't know what I may find. If I need a part I'll have to order it as there are no BRP dealers close by. In case you want to know BRP parts were used. Kit # 5001594. I guess it replaced #0434421. What should I look for once I remove lower unit. I need some guidance here guys. Thanks Mike

Gotta remember we aren't paid advisers here and volunteer out time. We have jobs and businesses to run so we help when we can.
What is your water pressure while on the muffs? Some water discharge is normal so you may not have done anything wrong. As long as the grommet of the water pump housing and the water tube lined up you should be fine. If you followed the directions in the instructions and didn't have any extra parts you should be OK. If you start getting overtemp alarms then you will have to drop the LU back down and check your work.

    Re: telltale flow (ChampioNman)

Sorry for the impatience. When I first started it I didn't see any pressure so I thought I needed more water so I turned the hose up more. Went back to look and it was around 4psi. This is at fast idle. When I first installed pump and checked it out WP was at around 12psi in the water at fast idle. Since then I've had the obstruction in the tell tale and have lost pressure at idle. This was the first time I ever had it on muffs and was suprised to see water coming out from this area. I thought this might be my pressure loss. While still on the muffs and engine shut down I noticed I still had water coming from this area until I got the water shut off. I have had no over temp alarms and have made some long runs. The normal discharge you mentioned is that water leaking past the grommet and water tube? BTW the only part I had left over was an o-ring that went on large water tube mine was 1/2 in. and didn't take one. Apologize for impatience. Mike

No problems sometimes folks get a little over zealous that we do hop right on a post, we do pretty good getting on them as quick as possible. You should be fine. 4-5 psi at idle is normal. I would be more worried if the pressure was lower than 18 at WOT.
