    tac and tilt gauge problems

I have a 150 rude , 91 model xp , it is on a stratos . My tach works sometimes and sometimes it doesnt .. seems like a loose wire or something to me , also my trim guage quit yesterday .. it just bottoms out like your not trimmed , not sure if these are related , just wanted to see if any one had any ideas before I jump in here and start looking for a short or something , THanks Mike

    Welcome to the BBC.

Do you have a volt meter in the boat?

Re: tac and tilt gauge problems (RUSTY63)

yes I do , and it shows 12 volts when motor is off and jumps up to around 13 when running , thanks for the welcome ,, been reading a long time just never needed to post before., tried to ohm out the unit on the motor to see if it was bad ( trim switch ) and it seems to be working ok , I have the same motor with broke crank that , I compared the 2 switch readings and they seem to be the same . Some where I read or some one told me a bad rectifier can cause the tach problem , but with my volt meter still showing a increase I would think it is still working , but that doesnt mean that it may have a winding that is opening and then closing . Thanks Mike

Just go home from fishing , and when tach quits , volts drop , but the voltage will come back up without the tach starting to work again, , does this sound like the rectifier or what ,, any help will be greatly appreciated . I have a whole motor minus the foot for parts. Would like to check out the parts on the boat to be sure what I need to replace

You can check the output to the tach, find the terminal strip on the motor, hook volt meter red lead to the gray wire and meter black lead to ground, start the motor (with water of course) the voltage at idle should be at 9 volts.

Re: tac and tilt gauge problems (mgeod)

If you connect a volt meter (test meter not a volt guage) to the gray lead screw in the terminal block (wires still connected) and to a ground on the motor, with the motor at idle, if you do not get a reading of 9 volts or close to it, that means the rectifier is not producing a tach signal and needs to be replaced.

Thank You for the Kind words, Glad to help.
