2003 evinrude 225 ficht want start

I have a strange problem, new(used)boat 71 hours on motor 03 225 ficht was running fine on ear muffs idling, good water, then it died just like i turned the key off. I started to restart it but it sents no power to the starter, the gauge on the dash flashs check engine. All fuses on motor are good that i can find. It is not locked up can move flywheel by hand. Nothing weird sound wise just like I turned off by key. Any info would help Shop rate is $100 an hour. Thanks Mike

sounds like an ignition error... might have to have the ecu worked on. Mine did the same. Was an injector circuit had to be replaced by DFI technologies. there is another way to retrieve codes on the motor other than the program you have to get the manual to figure it out. I blieve you have to disconect the tps sensor and move it in total motion of the tps with the motor off but the key has to be in the run position. Then the code numbers will flash off on the system check lgihts and you count the llights to figure the code numbers out,. but you must have the codes to konw which is diagnosted.

If the check engine light flashes on and off, it sounds like you have a code 57 problem. Did you rev the motor up in neutral or in gear while out of the water or did the motor start to race all by itself? When you pulled the throttle back as the motor was revving high, the computer thinks the motor is "running away" because of the high rpms and the closed throttle-- so it shuts down for safety. Only a laptop with the diagnostic software can clear the code 57 and allow the motor to start up again.

If the motor raced all by itself, there may be an internal fuel leak or a torn diaphragm and that caused the motor to rev up. Be sure to tell the dealer exactly what happened so it can be fixed right then and there.

If you revved the motor up, then consider your hands slapped and consider the dealer charge as the price of tuition.

Thanks a bunch, that is exactly what I did. New boat just bought it from up north, I live in La. I was just doing some maintance on it new gas, plugs, lower unit oil and some run time on it and yes I rev it up a little, it started to idle back down and died. Thanks a lot, Off to the shop I go and now I know.

Ask the dealer to check for the latest software for your motor. I seem to remember something about an update making the "code 57" shutdown less sensitive with a software update way back when.

Thanks again Seahorse, that was my next question, this could be a nightmare, you know how many bass fisherman load there boats with the motor in gear rev'ed up to help load and push the boat out of water at the landing, then the motor revs up(runs away)for a split second before killing the engine. Just think if you are at a big tourney and this happens. Is there anyway a lay person can reset this himself without spending a small fortune, I'm very good mechanicaly with my hands just need to know the process. thanks again.
