Gas spills back on my ZX when fueling - any help?

I have a 2006 ZX225 and I have to pump my gas at a rate of about a gallon per minute...can you believe it!? Otherwise, is splashes back out of the tank onto the sponsons. It doesn't matter what kind of pump pressure I'm getting or how fast I'm trying to fill the tank.

Some friends say that it's a "Skeeter" issue while others say it a breather line.

Any advice on what to look for and how to fix it?

Sometimes I have to pump slow and other times I can pump 100%....best success when I turn the nozzle sideways....

i have a 08 zx200 thats the same thing. ive splashed fuel on myself several times.
now i just use 4- 5 gallon cans and top it off before i go, they never splash and flow stops when the tank is full. also not having to pull into a gas station is nice.
    be cool

Re: Gas spills back on my ZX when fueling - any help? (no land)

I have a 2002 and I have found if the tank it totally empty it will overflow for the first few gallons. What is happening is air being forced out the gas fill hole and not the air exhaust hole. You will want to check the vent (exhaust) tube/port to make sure it isn't clogged with anything.

Also, it seems to work better if I don't stick the fuel nozel all the way into the tank (up to the splash guard on the nozel). I usually stick it about half way in and that seems to allow enough air flow around it that it won't overflow.

Ive found that if I dont stick the nozzel all the way in and turn it upside down it seems to work best on my ZX225. Every once in a while I will run across a pump that I can just stick it in and let it pump, but thats only been a couple of times.

I've found that mine can be tempermental as well. I've found myself playing it safe by putting the nozzle in halfway and pumping at a medium speed, all while keeping the rear deck lid open so I can see the tanks as I fill them.

+1 on every response..... except for the rear deck lid. I don't want to know how much longer it's really gonna take or more it's really gonna cost to really fill that thing up.

No problems on my SX190. I can pump at full speed with any throw up.

My SX190 that I had was the same way, never had that problem, just put the nozzle in, click the handle wide open and let it fill up.. but not with this ZX225! Also like someone else mentioned, I always open the rear lids so I can watch the level in the tanks. It does hurt your feelings, but it will help keep from over flowing.

My TZX190 will do the same thing. I've found that if I invert the pump nozzle it solves the problem. Also I do insert it all the way. With some pumps that have a lot of flow I have to run the nozzle about half way though.

Mine is the same 06 ZX 225, the way it will work everytime is like others have said, invert the nozzle and stick it in all the way, sometimes you may have to bring it out about half way. That should cure the problem.

Re: Gas spills back on my ZX when fueling - any help? (DJSkeeter)

I had this problem big time on the Stratos I used to have. Trick was to hold the nozzle just right and pump slow.

My Skeeter does pretty good filling though. If it gets full and I am not paying attention it will blow out. Also on my starboard fill, I get a little spray of fuel coming out the vent line. Normally I get gas on the way home from the lake, I usually just fill one tank and let them equalize.

My Bug does the same thing. Still wish they would design an under the seat fuel tank like Ranger, Triton and many others.

    never had a problem

how do you get them to equalize? I have 2 tanks, and they don't equalize. Is it something to do with the tank selector valve? I think I have it on "both" but it seems to me that whatever tank I'm using is the one that goes down in fuel level....the other tank stays the same.

Next time you fill it up try and getting some of the paper towel at the pump and wrapping them around the nozzle.
